A land of varied scents

by 850prc

One thing about India is that they adore a nice scent in the air. Everyone is familiar with the wide variety and quality of Indian incense, and I'm always impressed and amazed at how much better incense smells when it's burned by people who know "what they're doing", so to speak. I have learned that patchoulli is one of my favorite incense varieties, although I also like sandalwood. The Nag Champa is a heavier incense and is often in evidence in and around the various Hindu temples. And beyond incense, there are also the various spices and scents one associates with fine cuisine and the marketplace. Each turn or change in shop venue will give your olfactories another challenge and pleasure. Even something as mundane as walking the line at a hotel dining room buffet is a sensory celebration, as you move past each entree or offering. As you probably know, Indian funerary rites generally...

Driving yourself? Keep your wallet handy.

by 850prc

If you choose to drive yourself, or if your contract with an Indian driver does not include all costs associated with motoring in India, you'd better keep your wallet or purse handy as you drive India's highways. There isn't a HUGE expense, but it's fairly constant, the need to crank out a few more rupees to continue on your way.First of all, some of the larger, more modern and better-maintained highways are, in fact, toll roads. Just like on turnpikes in North America or Europe, you'll pull up to toll gates and will have to pay a certain number of rupees to continue on your way. The cost involved depends on exactly what vehicle you are driving. Large trucks or buses cost more than smaller vans and wagons. They in turn cost more than smaller cars, motorcycles, scooters and other modes of transport. UNLIKE in the US, these toll roads don't seem to exclude certain classes of vehicles. I...

by mssthirdeye

Hai, I want to give one bit of information, since u have booked by online, suppose your tickets are not confirmed, then u will be not allowed to board the train, and even if you board, you will be treated as non ticket holder and fined as ticketless. This has happenned to me.When i confirmed with the railway officals, they accept that it is true.Hence confirm your booking and then enter. Moreover your booking may get confirmed but but i said but, if it is not confirmed than take care. What happens is you are alloted berths only if there are cancelation via online and not over the counter.

Birds, wildlife, wilderness...all in India

by 850prc

A lot of people may not instantly associate India with being an ecological vacation, a chance to enjoy wildlife, birding and nature. But, there are huge tracts of wildnerness and marsh throughout the subcontinent to be enjoyed by visitors. There are species after species that you can find in India, and almost nowhere else. It's truly a great place to enjoy nature. On OUR trip, the two nature stops that we made were in Ranthambhore (the world-famous tiger sanctuary) and Bharatpur/Keoladeo/Ghana Birding Park - which features populations of birds seen only in one or two places worldwide. Both were excellent choices, and for more information on these two destinations, visit my Sawai Madohpur (Ranthambhore) and Bharatpur pages. So, if you are a nature lover and you're visiting India, you might want to look beyond the temples, traffic and city lights. What a moment....late in the afternoon on...

Look BEHIND the walls along the streets

by 850prc

One thing that I noticed on our trip to India was that our hotels seemed to "spring up out of nowhere". We'd be riding along, heading for our lodging. As you'd expect, I'd be looking around, back and forth, front to back... basically scanning for the hotel myself. And then, all of a sudden, we'd turn into a little portal in the walls along the streets and presto... there we are, at the hotel. My point here is this... if you are looking for a place to stay, be aware of small direction signs attached to streetfront shops or to walls. If you go through the little gate they're usually directing you to, you'll find some amazingly beautiful and memorable places to stay. When it comes to driving along city streets and looking for hotels, what you initially see is definitely not what you could possibly have. Check it out.In the accompanying photos, you'll see a simple sign on a street in Jaipur,...

Would you be in my picture, please?

by 850prc

One thing that amazed us involved people wanting US to be in THEIR photos. Over and over and over, we'd have people come up to us, usually at one of the public monuments or buildings, and ask if they could take their picture with us. I asked one of our guides about it, and he said that even though India is becoming a more affluent country, very few "ordinary" Indians have traveled abroad. For most of them, holiday and travels involve visiting sites in their own country and region. When they come across obvious tourists from far, far away, they're intrigued and interested in meeting them. And, they seem to LOVE being photographed with people from distant lands. Many times when we'd be asked for a pose, we'd also take the opportunity to record the meeting for our photo files. It's a warm and glowing look back at the friendliness of India and her people. In the photo accompanying this tip, we...

Do you prefer Big Tatas or Little Tatas?

by 850prc

OK, this tip probably nailed a few more perverts who are googling "tata" out there. Heh-he-heh.Did you know that India has a thriving automotive industry? Most of the cars on the road in India were made in India. Sure, quite a few of them are nameplates from other manufacturers in other lands.... Toyota and Suzuki are prime examples. But, most of those cars on the roads in India were built on the subcontinent, not in Japan. The prime INDIAN manufacturer of automobiles is Tata Motor Company. Founded in 1945, I read that they now control some 60% of the Indian market. I suppose if they ever negotiate their way around all of the United States' EPA rules and regulation, they could see light of day on our interstates as well. The most common and popular car model in India is called the Tata Indica, and it's a consistently updated version of a car introduced as India's first indigenously...

India- the wonderland...

by nitendra.khatri

Hello there and a warm Namaste from an Indian on behalf of India,It was indeed nice to see you interested in visiting this lovely land of God and let me assure you, in India the only thing that you will see around is spirituality in all aspects of life. since you have chosen all destinations which are a spiritual hub in India, i congratulate you on your choice of travel.Well, it was indeed strange that all the replies you have are from non-Indians who have come here as tourists and not from native ...Yes, malaria is indeed a problem here, but only if you want it to be spread to you. Not everyone is suffering from malaria here in India and not everyone is immuned against this disease or it carrier mosquito. So, yes it is a disease which is spread here, but so is AIDS and other diseases... of you wont get AIDS on your own, you wont get affected by Malaria either. so just take precautions...
