It's quite HORNY out on the roads

by 850prc

One thing you'll learn quickly about India and driving in India... the horn is an essential part of the car. If you are riding with an Indian, you won't drive more than two or three blocks without hearing the horn blown at you, or hearing your driver blow his horn. Now in America, or perhaps in western Europe as well, the blowing of a horn is a bit of a challenge in traffic. It means, in some ways, look out - get out of my way - what are you doing, you fool? Insert your own preconception of what the horn means in your world. In India, it also means "look out", but... it's a friendly mention. It's letting the little kid standing by the road know that he needs to watch out for traffic. It's letting the cycle-rickshaw guy know that you are about to pass him and not to move into your lane. It's letting the driver of the large truck/lorry ahead of you know that you are behind him and that...

Departure Tax at Indian Airports

There is no system of charging departure tax from those exiting India. Even for domestic connections, there is no departure tax.You cant carry loose batteries in your hand baggage. Better put it in your check in luggage.

You're going to need some rupees in your wallet

by 850prc

The unit of currency in India is the rupee. The term rupee dates from the Moghul era, but the modern rupee is very much a part of the world's economic scene. For your trip to India, you'll definitely need to get your hands on a few rupees from time to time. However, you will also find that India is a country where "world" currencies are also welcomed in many places. Our US dollars, especially the $1 and $5 bills, were well appreciated as tips and such. I suspect the same is true with Aussie and NZ dollars, as well as the Euro and the Yen. But, I can't say for sure, I only know about US dollars for sure. The rupee itself is not available outside India, and technically you are not "allowed" to export any Indian currency. However, I'm sure every tourist leaves the country with a few bills as souvenirs. I'm offering photographic evidence of my economic criminal activity down below. You will...

Festivals: Diwali

by Rupanworld

India is a land of festivals. Starting from the Pushkar Mela (the camel fair in Rajasthan) to religious ceremonies, every day there is some festival. Diwali or Deepawali is one of my most favourite festivals. Its the festival of lights and is a major Hindu festival. During this day celebrations lights or lamps are lit and the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil within every human being. Diwali is celebrated in October but the day varies from year to year (on the new moon day of the Indian month of Kartika). It is believed that this day Lord Rama of Ayodhya, had returned home after his 14-year exile in the forest during which he defeated the demon Ravan. The people of Ayodhya (his kingdom's capital) are said to have shown him the way back by lighting rows of lamps until his palace.Apart from the well lit houses with candles/lamp (and these days much with artificial fancy...

Drink bottled water, and other tips

by 850prc

As I make this tip, I mean no insult to India and her sanitation. But, the fact is that the public water supply often has issues that can result quickly in a nasty case of "Delhi Belly" as they call it. Sure, billions of Indians drink the water in their country daily, but they've become microbiologically used the the population of microbes resident in the local H2O. YOU, as a casual and short-term visitor are not "immune".So, you should definitely drink bottled water. Make sure that you find a good quality name-brand bottled water, and be sure that you see and approve of the "seal" on the bottle. There are many stories of smaller local restaurants and such simply refilling used Aquafina bottles with the local stuff - which sure isn't going to do YOU any good. And remember to consider the other sources of swallowing water from the local supply. Don't sing and sip in the shower, and...

Gatik Eventures - THE BEST travel services

by 850prc

I'm not a huge fan of organized tours, primarily because I prefer to travel with my family and friends and not a group. However in some locales in this world, the security of tour services can be a comfort. I've found the perfect combination, and I again employed the plan on our trip to India.::I:: plan our itinerary, I find the hotels and I make bookings. Then, I seek the services of a professional tour operator for driver and city guide services in the places we go. For India, I followed the advice of a VT friend, Alan (atufft) and chose Gatik Eventures. Alan had used them several years ago and said they (and specifically Navin Pandey) were GREAT. He was 100% on target.Starting last February, I began communicating with Navin and with Gatik Eventures. I made my own plans and hotel reservations, but it was nice to have Navin to bounce ideas around with. He would tell me if he felt I...

Dental Care in India for first time visitors USA

by cochinjew

I have to agree that a first trip abroad to India would be a great cultural shock but it could be a welcome one. I have just shepharded one older and two younger americans ( all three first time out of USA) for ten days through Cambodia, where the infrastructure is much better than India and less people of course.I have experience only in Cochin in India. it is very quiet and you can stay safe and walk everywhere in Fort Cochin and organize excursions everywhere.while I agree that medical care can be a hit and miss and rather shoddy and chaotic in India, dental care standards are very good and inexpensive by American and European standards. Since the care involves only a limited part of your body, the risks taken are less. I live in a country with excellent dental care, and I have not been impressed by dental care in the USA, even though the offices are clean etc, the care given is a hit...

A country with wide diversity

by Rupanworld

India is not only a very big country, all its regions are so diverse that no tourist can ever get the true and complete flavour of India in one trip. I have lived here since birth and I am yet to travel to most regions. Just talking about the diversity of the climate: The North of India covering the Ladakh area is as cold as -50 degrees, while in the south of India, it is said there there is no winter season at all, the months here are categorised into the three categories, Hot, Hotter and Hottest. While in the West of india, in Rajasthan, you can see one of the largest and most beautiful deserts where one finds no rain, in the east of India is Cherrapunji which receives the highest rainfall throughout the world. This was just an example of the wide diversity that you come across in India. If you travel throughout the country by train, you will notice that after every 100 kilometers, not...

Visiting a dentist or an optician

by Rupanworld

This tip comes from my experience with many people who visited India in the past and followed this on advice of earlier tourists. Going to a dentist and doing a cosmetic surgery on your teeth might be too expensive in most nations of the world. In India, even the best and most reliable dentist costs you less than 10% of what you would ideally pay in Europe or America. Indian medical facilities are good, just ensure that you are going to a good clinic, that's all. Same with getting your eye check up, damn cheap in India, and so are good pair of glasses. If you are visiting India, why not take the advantage.

Conversion of foreign currency

by vpas

I sincerely advise you *not to trade any currency directly to buy items in india(that is do not give foreign currency directly to buy things)you dont get a good deal that way.*you should not do double conversion, just take what you have and convert it into rupess when you come here from an authorised dealer.(THAT is dont convert pounds into dollars and then the dollars into rupees;just make it a single conversion which will help you save on the commission and exchange costs)*if you have an atm, carry only minimum required and the rest you can just get from you atm machine here.
