Beer shop: Alcohol

At the top of Palolem main street (the end away from the beach), there's a beer shop on the left if you have your back to the sea, where you can buy beer, western spirits, and also the local feni, which is fermented from coconuts or cashew apples - you can buy either type here, the bottles have different coloured labels. It's cheap and quite pleasant - mix it with some lemonade and you have a nice drink to sip watching the sunset!

Unknown bookshop: Books

If you're in need of some reading material for while you're lying on the beach, there is a little second hand bookshop next to the internet cafe on the road leading to Hi Tide. He will do swaps, but you won't get much money off your purchase. He does have a decent selection though, although probably fewer 'classics' in the mix here than anywhere else! Prices range from 150-400 INR I think, mostly depending on the size of the book.

Ipod shop: Music

If you find yourself longing to listen to something different while you're away, in Palolem there is a shop where you can go and download music onto your iPod from their computers, for fairly reasonable prices. They also sell new iPods, albeit at much the same price as in Europe, so if yours gets broken, you can replace it here.

Newtons shopping in Candolim

Newtons in Candolim is the largest shopping centre in North Goa. A security guard check all customers before entering. Bags are not allowed inside and will be placed in a deposit box by the guard.

What to buy: Food, drinks, alcohol, skin care products, etc.

What to pay: The prices are a bit more expensive than it is on the smaller shops in the village.

Baga saturday night market: One of two nightmarkets in Goa

Baga Saturday night market
4 more images

There are two nightmarkeds in Goa, Ingo's Saturday Night Market in Arpora and Baga Saturday night market (see pictures). Booth are good places if you like to go shopping in the nights.

Instead of walking in the heat of the day, like it is in Anjuna, you can walk under the night sky, lit up with lamps. There are plenty of handicrafts shops. Stalls sell all kinds clothes, trinkets, exotic, palmistry, wood carvings and delicacies and Goanese Cuisine.

Live bands plays from a stage inside the maked. This is a nice place to stay in the Saturday night.

What to buy: All kinds of Indian crafts, spices, clothes, DVD's and CD's.

The salesmen in Goa are experts, so remember to bargain well. You will probably get a high start price from the salesmen, so start with a disgracefully low offer. But do it with a smile.

Hopeless Hard/Pressure Sell
XKuger profile photo

I visited one Carpet / antique / handicraft shops. I found that the shop did have a lont of unique items and most catered to oversears clients based on what I could see. I also noticed that non of the items had list prices bit some 10 character code... I was interested on some items however when I asked the sales lady about list price she said that she would call the shop manager.

The Manager in the mean time seemed to be busy trying to gauge my affordability by using small talk as to what was the hotel where I was staying and if I was from overseas etc. Then I was given an exhorbetant $$ price to which I said sorry that is simply well beyond what I was intending to spend on a trinkey. This was followed by a heavy sale pitch of what was I willing to pay and if he could offer me two for 1.5 time the price/ free shipping to New York etc.

I simply refused and left the store. It was a very inpleasent experience.

What to buy: India is a shoppers paradise and one can find a treasure trove of fantastic stuff that you can buy for your home / for friends however please do your home work as place to buy from before you walk in the door.

What to pay: If you get it right you can find many bargains.

Anjuna is known throughout North Goa and to travellers from all over the world for its flea market which takes place every Wednesday at the Beach. You can find hundreds of stalls selling clothes, jewellery, souvenirs, food, drink, cigarettes, artwork, shoes....well basically anything and everything. However, it seems more geared up for women than men as I only found belts and watches for us guys.

Panaji: Spices

What to buy: Goa produces exotic aromatic spices like Black pepper, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cloves, Chillies, Coriander etc. and they are generally produced in an organic manner. Buying spices at cheap prices at Goa is a good idea.
