Anjuna Flea Market, Goa

Anjuna is known throughout North Goa and to travellers from all over the world for its flea market which takes place every Wednesday at the Beach. You can find hundreds of stalls selling clothes, jewellery, souvenirs, food, drink, cigarettes, artwork, shoes....well basically anything and everything. However, it seems more geared up for women than men as I only found belts and watches for us guys.

Anjuna flea market on Wednesdays is a must. This colourful hectic market sells everything you would expect a flea market to sell - jewellery, clothes, ornaments, spices and the odd freshly made samosa. The majority of the market is under cover so you will get a a bit of respite from the sun. The sellers are mainly locals and hippies selling their wares but many come from afar to this imfamous market which is relatively new compared to Mapusa Market but unique in itself. If you hate getting hasselled then this isn't the place for you but please remember that everyone is trying to make a living....

Also you must stop at Looda's bar on the edge of the market overlooking Anjuna Beach, the food is great and you will be treated to some great music from the local bands - a mix of Indian fusion music.

Starts at 9am and shuts down around sunset. There are plenty of tuk tuks and taxi's around to get you home.

It is said that before when foreign travellers and hippies stayed in goa for a long time, they used to sell of their stuff before leaving goa. This stuff was available in the Anjuna Flea Market. But, now you can get almost anything from around India at a good bargain in this Flea Market. Native of various states have set up shops here.

Anjuna Flea Market is only on Wednesdays, so if you are in goa on a wednesday and you love to bargain then you should definitely visit it.

Wednesday morning is the traditional day to go and buy all your ethnic clothing, joss-sticks and love bangles. I'm rambling here, as I have no interest in all that hippy rubbish. I was just dragged around the market by my long-suffering girlfriend (and later wife) who needed a bit of 'retail therapy' at the time.

The rows of stalls, cafes and assorted 'entertainers' was certainly a lively mix. As to be expected in Goa, most of the visitors were run-of-the-mill tourists on a week-long package deal from Europe. The actual number of 'hippies' who had given up trying to understand the world in about 1974 was actually rather small. Maybe one day you will be able to visit human safari parks with different enclosures for Punks, Hippies, new romantics and the like. You could certainly capture some of the hippies left in the wild here.

If only all hippys look like the girl in the picture...I might be a bit more interested in Peace love and understanding then.

This market used to be an exclusive haven for backpackers & hippies way back in 60s & 70s. It is still a colorful assembly of every race. Much of what is found now are trinkets, T-shirts, belts, handicrafts, jewelers etc sold by migrant traders.

This is held every Wednesday in the main season from September to April. Its been here for about twenty years and every week its packed! Sellers range from travellers who have settled here, to locals, and even from outside of the state. Theres all the usual tourist tat...wood carvings, clothes, jewellery etc. If you are visiting...go very early...as the site has very little cover...and it gets very hot!

The collection of people attracted to the beach settlement of Anjuna in North Goa may seem eclectic at first glance, but there are common (if loose) organic and spiritual threads woven between the hippies, artists, mild crazies and supposed ex-materialists who congregate here.

It's famous throughout Goa for its Wednesday flea market, and has retained an undeniable if somewhat shabby charm. This is a good place to stick around for a while, make some friends and engage in mellow contemplation while the sun goes down. Full moon, when the infamous parties take place, is a particularly good time to be here if you want to indulge in bacchanalian delights. The main beach isn't the best, so it's worth the walk to the small, protected sliver of sand at South Anjuna where the area's long-term house-renters tend to gather.

This market in Anjuna was started back in the 60's by the hippies who frequented Goa. Today the market is a hive of activity every Wednesday and just teems with colour, and atmosphere and the smells of the spice and incense.
You really have to bargain for everything here and if you don't get the price you want walk away and they will come after you.
We stopped for a drink in the bar right by the beach and had a refreshing shandy to the strains of Steely Dan's "Riki don't lose that number" blasting out-brilliant!!!
