Dudhsagar Waterfalls, Goa

The Dudhsanger Falls are the second largest in India. Once here you need to hire a jeep (it is a 40 minute bumpy journey, sometimes through shallow water). If you want to cut the cost of the jeep hire - split it with another. We were a family of 4 who found another family of 4 - we grouped together and paid half each.

Once out the jeep it is a short clamber over rocks to get to the waterfall. It is very beautiful AND, even better, you can swim in the waters beneath it. The water stays shallow for quite some time. In fact, I was practically standing the whole way to underneath the fall!

There are lots of people visiting... Get here early to have a chance at a bit of quiet.

It is not possible to visit the falls all year round as when the Monsoon comes the water levels throughout this area rise by quite an satonishing rate.

NB. You should be allowed one hour swimming time at the falls.

Dudhsagar means sea of milk, although not too impressive in the summer these falls are said to be spectacular during monsoon, hence the name. The falls are on the Mandovi river in Goa and are very near to the border with Karnataka. When your transport drops you off there are jeeps waiting to take you through the jungle and up to the waterfall. The drive up is quite interesting and the guide will point out interesting sights, ie. termite hills. Once you are there the monkeys will entertain you and you can swim in the beautiful freshwater pool at the bottom of the falls. A railway bridge is built across the falls and when a train passes over the passengers will wave and cheer to the visitors at the falls. A thoroughly enjoyable day out.

While staying at the Backwoods Camp (see Accommodation tip) we spent an afternoon at these falls. They are claimed by some sources to be amongst the highest in the country at 600 metres, although Wikipedia has them as fifth highest and only 310 metres – someone needs to get the tape measure out LOL.

Dudhsagar means “Sea of Milk”, referring to the appearance of the water swirling around the rocks. To see the full effect you need to visit during or soon after Monsoon season – we went just after, in October, which was perfect as the roads were dry and easily passable but the water still poring down. I think though that even in the dry season when we were there the falls might be worth the effort needed to reach them, especially on a hot day when you can enjoy a cooling dip in one of the pools at their foot.

We also had great fun watching the antics of the monkeys who gathered in the parking area where visitors board the jeeps that take them from the village to the vicinity of the falls themselves. Of course these clever animals know that the tour guides bring supplies of bananas to tempt them, and they are pretty fearless in approaching people, so it’s easy to get good photos of them (see photos 3 and 4).

Directions The falls are situated on the border of Karnataka and Goa, right in the west of the latter. If not on a tour as we were, the falls can be reached by a train from Margoa (about two hours) or by hiring a car for the day. The last part of the journey is by jeep and then on foot, and can be a little precarious – so much so that I’ve written a Warnings & Danger tip about the path to the falls.

Doodh Sagar is a famous water fall and very importnat excursion for Goa travelers. It took one whole day from Panjim to go for seeing this nature's beauty and come back.Since we were on short trrip to Goa there was scaracity of time and we decided to skip it. But we were lucky to have the glimpse of Doodh sagar water fall from our train. We depart from Madgaon station in Goa express at 4pm for Delhi and very soon we found our train is stopped for some minutes at Doodh Sagar Station and we were seeing the beautiful water fall our train window.We also witness the friendly monkies of Doodh sagar who were asking thier due from train passengers by windows.

The waterfalls are a great place to visit.You can get there a number of ways by Taxi by Rail or take an organised trip. A taxi is a good way of seeing another side of Goa en route. Or the train Journey and overland scenery that awaits or an organised day trip which can be booked around calangute none of these travel options will break the bank.When you arrive you get taken by jeep to the waterfalls were a guide will escort you on foot, you can then feed the hundreds of wild monkeys that inhabit the area.The rail bridge runs across the top of the waterfall that gushes down the mountainside.You can swim beneath the waterfall or sit on the rocks soaking up the sun having cold drink and listen to falls smashing down.

Set in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary, the Dudshagar waterfalls are the second highest in India. I took a taxi to Colem before joining up with others also wanting to go to the falls, the cost of the return jouney to the falls was 300 rupees. What followed was a memorable 45 minute bone jarring ride by four wheel drive up to the falls. A short 5 minute stroll to the falls followed with plenty of people stopping on the way to feed the monkeys. There were quite a few people around trying to sell fruit to feed the monkeys with but they weren't really a problem.

Upon reaching the falls, a lovely cooling swim in the pool awaits. It is just a case of clambering over the rocks to pick your spot to leave your towel or do a spot of sunbathing. The water is deliciously cool and welcome and it is a short swim across to get beneath the waterfall itself though I don't think that perhaps I would do that immediately after the monsoons! The only thing to be very careful with is your entry and exit into the pool as the rocks at the waters edge are incredibly slippery.

The waterfalls are a plastic free zone and everyone is requested to leave carrier bags and plastic bottles of water at the checkpoint up to the falls. There are plenty of cold drinks sellers at the waterfalls selling bottles of coke etc so you don't have to worry about dehydration. In the carpark at the falls there was a stall selling .... plastic bottles of water - so much for a plastic free zone!

Amazing trip well worth the money. Hired a taxi guy for the day who drove us down there. You then meet up with the jeep company who take you deep into the jungle. After 45 mins you walk to the waterfall followed all the way there by countless little monkeys. After stopping to feed them you then get the chance to swim in this beautiful freshwater pool. We stayed for an hour or two and then walked back got on the jeep and were then shown around the hindu temples and had a drink with the only people who live in the sanctuary. The priest and his family. We stayed for hours drinking in the middle of the jungle. It was great. Finally we got back on the jeep and trundled back to meet the taxi. Annoyingly we were then told off by the manager of the jeep company who tried to charge us extra for spending so long even though it was the guide who kept telling us to stay as long as we liked. Don't trust him, he counted the money out in front of us and hid some behind the book he was carrying, demanding the rest of the money. We finally managed to get him to pay it back and we left. Don't trust him. Ask the amount before you go, ask how long you can go for and pay that amount on return.

a trek down to doodhsagar will give u sme of the most amazing sights that u can see.... u will pass some rivulet lik the one below, pass through a place that swarms with butterflies n ultimately get a close up of the fall itself which is beautiful!!
