  • To get about, get a moped

by AlBooth Written Jan 17, 2006

If you wanna get out of the resorts, GET YOURSELF A MOPED! It seems like everyone you speak to knows someone who's got a moped for rent, and at the end of the season, you can get some really good deals. I secured mine for 150rs a day, which was pretty darn cheap. Ask around, don't be afraid to barter and remember that on your first coupla days, you're still getting used to local prices. For the more adventurous, try hiring an Enfield motorcycle. They're bigger, faster (and therefore more dangerous) but they do say that you've got to be a native to be able to actually start one.

Once you've sorted out your scooter, don't be afraid to explore, however, if you can, stay off the main highways. I took a couple of taxi/bus trips out and about and I wouldn't suggest going out on anything smaller than a REALLY big car. Stick to local highways. They're not very well signposted, but as long as you know roughly where you're heading, people will always be willing to help you out with directions.

Remember the rules of the road. It's a very simple hierarchy, whatever's biggest has the right of way. However, don't forget that the cow is sacred in India, so they're at the top of the hierarchy and you'd be in big trouble if you injured one.

It's possible that you'll have to get a ferry to head to where you need to be. When I was there, foot passengers and mopeds travelled for free but be warned: you've got to be fearless. Get on quickly so you've got enough time to turn your moped round so you're facing out the way you came for a quick exit.

Me on my hog, waiting to get on a ferry You want me to ride this onto that?

    Getting around

    by mickeyjane1 Written Jun 19, 2004

It is quite easy to get around Goa, there are buses as well as car rentals. There is also the motorcycle taxi. Several ferry services are also available.

Actually to get around we hired a taxi for the day, it was very inexpensive. We went into Panjim from the resort of Candolim and a return trip cost approx 5 pounds for a half day, with driver guiding and staying with us.

From Pune, we left at 9pm by bus and we reached Goa at 7am. In roaming around, I suggest for a motorbike which the hotel can arrange it for a good price.

You can easily get bikes on hire. Jus show your driving licence and get going. The hire period would be anywhere from 1 day to a month.

If you're going a short distance take a tuk tuk for the experience. It can be a bumpy ride though but great fun!

If you have no experience of riding on an elephant, Goa is one place where you can try it for the first time.

It’s easy to rent a motorcycle, scooter or car in Goa. There are a lot of places places where you can hire them. But remember that traffic is crazy in India.
