Fantastic bas relief cover the entire exterior. The many friezes depict some 2000 elephants with riders and trappings, horses, mythical beasts and floral motifs, reminiscent of the grandeur of an ancient royal civilisation.

The 32 pillared pavilion is magnificent. Pillars in the Navranga hall are exquisitely polished. The ceiling in the typical Hoysala style, has been carved in intricate patterns, hardly visible in the darkness in the interior as well as the beautiful goddesses statues keeping the sanctum sanctorum.

Belur and Halebid, both in Karnataka, are 17 km apart, but they have always been referred to in one breath, as belonging together. The Shiva Temple is unique for its two shrines in the Linga form and gigantic figures of Nandi (sacred bull) on the southern entrance.

There are Shiva-Parvati groups besides some figures of Ganesha. The doorkeepers are carved with an fantastic sense for detail.
