Katra Things to Do

  • Take a helicopter ride to the temple

You could take a ride on a chopper from Sanjichat to the temple. However it is about 2.5 kms from the helipad to the temple .This distance could be covered either on foot, horse back or carried in palanquins. The helicopter ride costs Rs.800/per person per one way. Most people prefer to go by the helicopter and come back either on foot or on horse...

  • Get a foot massage!

At the chowk area in Katra, there are young boys who would massage your feet for a very nominal amount of 30 to 50 Rupees. They do a fabulous job and it is indeed much needed after the tedious climb uphill.

  • Be carried on a palanquin!

To go uphill to visit the shrine many people who are unable to climb take the help of these "palanquins" or palkis either for half way or the entire stretch.

  • Avoid horses unless you are truly unfit!

Many people use horses and ponies to ride to the shrine. However, my sincere plea to you is to avoid the horses unless you are truly unfit or if you have young children who may need help.

  • Trek up the Trikoota Hills to have...

Trekking up the 14 km path to the shrine of Goddess Vaishnodevi is quite challenging. It is also fun and energizing in a way. The fervent chants of devotees all through the path are inspiring and push one to tread the steep path. On the way to the shrine one has to cross --Ban Ganga or the place where the Goddess shot an arrow to get water to...

  • Be soaked in fervent devotion at the...

The Vaishno Devi Temple draws people from all over the world. It is mesmerizing to see the fervent devotion and the spirit of the devotees. The hike up the hill to the shrine is 14 kms. The first leg is quite steep while the second leg after the shrine of Ardh Kuari is easier. The temple is open 24 hours. There is tight security and one has to get...

Katra Restaurants

  • Just try the street food...

All along the roadsides, one would find people with big brass vessels selling soft white bun/bread called kulchas with either a chick pea filling or cheese and vegetables or soya chunks with spices... all the versions are simply yummy!! It is a must try. They cost anywhere between 10 to 25 rupees.

  • Don't miss the Parontas here!

This place is most famous here for the freshness of the food and good quality. We had Rajma chawal, baingan ka bharta and alu gobi parantha. They were all yumm!! However do insist that you want less oil otherwise it tends to be a bit too oily.

  • Clean and easy!

Right near the main fountain and bus stand, it is very easy to spot. Frequented by most visitors here, it is clean, big, air conditioned and fast-enough. Hard to ask for more. The food is good too :)

for the yatra most people prefer to trek as that is the most difficult ,as it is steep uphill climb,if you are physically unfit and cannot do the climb ponies as well as mules are avaliable at a price, for old people there are Palinquin carried by 4 to 6 people(this is the saddest part people carry the load of a humanbeing as well as the chair for a living).

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This person who worked at the hotel where we stayed was so genuinely helpful. He is not a guide, but he helped us immensely with no expectations. I found him do the same to many others that we came across. I insisted that he take a small payment. In case you ever need a guide or someone to come along with you by foot to the temple, arrange last minute helicopter rides, or clear other doubts do contact Mr. Ganesh on 09796615970.
