If walking 14 kms uphill looks tiring then you can hire a mule from Gaurikund, be sure you check out the current government rates and then get ready to haggle the price.
Other forms are "doli" or a palanquin carried by four men, its tough on the poor souls but thn that's life.

From Joshimath, take jeep/bus to Chamoli 50kms downhill. From Chamoli, take the gopeshwar route, reach Gaurikund passing through Gopeshwar, Mandal, Chopta, Okhimath, Guptkashi and Sonprayag. This journey from Chamoli is through the pictureous forest road. Traffic on this road is very low.. At times, you would passing through road overlooking the valley upto 1000m deep.

To reach Kedarnath most suitable type of transport is bus or taxi. one can hire these bus or taxi from Haridwar or from Rishikesh. taxi are also available there on share basis.
