The flower petals ritual

by josephescu

This is a description of a worship ritual i performed at Pushkar, in honour of Brahma the Creator. As far as I was able to observe, the ceremonial was quite simple: a handful of flower petals was given to me upon entering the temple. I was to hand in the petals to the Brahman priest (in the middle of the altar), he would say some words, retain half of them and returned the other half, for me to go and lay them on the sacred lake. Needles to say that upon arriving at the lake with the petals in hand, a bunch of pushy “priests” appeared from all around, since i was an obvious “sure target”. Ultimately, I had to let one of them “teach” me the ritual on what should I say and how should I lay the flowers on the lake, a ceremonial out of which I unfortunately did not understand anything, for we was speaking Hindu all the time. Once the petals floating over the water, he turned in English,...

Where is Brahma in Hindu pantheon of Gods?

by josephescu

First of all, do not mix Brahma (the God of Creation) with the Brahman (Supreme Cosmic Spirit). For me, it was impossible to have a superficial understanding of the Hindu pantheon of Gods. The fact that there are so many Gods, presumably everyone with his own...."specialisation", gets even more complicated when¡every God comes in different forms of manifestations, or incarnations...with different names and representations....However, what can be easily seen is that Vishnu, Shiva and Ganesh are "very popular", if one is to count the number of temples and shrines dedicated to them all around India, while Brahma the Creator is almost absent, he does not have temples of his own. And here is where the tricky part comes - if Brahma is "the Creator", with Vishnu being the maintainer or preserver, Shiva the destroyer or transformer and Ganesh the wisdom guy, then why is Brahma so "under...

Dahi Handi

by bradbeaman

Dahi Handi (pot of ghee) The Dahi Handi festival that remembers the legend that Krishna as a child was very fond of ghee (purified butter). Krishna would gather his friends and they would steal ghee from the houses of the milkmaids. To protect their ghee from the naughty children the milkmaids kept it in a pot and hung it from the ceiling of their houses. Today's practice of Dahi Handi poses the same challenge of finding a way to the pot of ghee kept high and out of reach. This ghee pot is then hung by a rope and the participants build a human tower to reach it and break it open.

Elephants!

by AcornMan

I was really hoping I'd get to see an Elephant not in captivity while in India, but I figured it was a real long shot. As it turned out, I saw two of them on two separate occasions, both walking ona road. The first was on the highway between Nagercoil and Madurai and was being used to pull a cart. The second was on a road west of Nagercoil and was leading a parade for some kind of celebration. So, unless I just got incredibly lucky, I guess they're not so rare after all. Pretty cool.

Don't use your left hand

by TheGypsy3

They use their left hands to go to the bathroom in India. As a result, its an insult if you offer your left hand when making new acquaintances so always offer the right, no matter what. They only eat using their right hand, too. I found that sometimes it helps to sit on your left hand when eating so as not to use it, and i still find myself doing so now back in the US. Using tools and other such stuff it doesnt really matter but for food and greetings, make sure you stick to the right.

Children in India

by supune

Even if you are here for spiritual reasons or just to sight/site see, make sure you have a lot of interaction with the children. It will be slightly different at the tourist attractions, the slums, the city centers, but you will notice an interesting difference from how the kids are from where you are from. There's kind of a forgotten happiness I felt that's hard to explain in words.

Wannabe Country

by cochinjew

from sify.comWannabee great nations forever remain a few steps short of greatness. Instead, they take a good deal of pride in the global stature of their nationals. Psychologists have several terms for this type of compensation. Rather than Shining India (even if the shine remains diffuse and scattered), we go in search of our Shining NRIs. Several years ago, I was a frequent houseguest of Mahdi Masud, the Pakistani Ambassador in Brussels (my girlfriend, an American, was a close friend of his daughter). Ambassador Masud was, like Tharoor, an articulate, PR-savvy alumnus of Tufts. One of the things I still remember him explaining was India’s ‘systemic weakness’—because it tried hard to please everybody, everywhere, all the time. He also said Indians were veterans at getting a consolation price, and convincing themselves that this was what they had actually sought all along. All the...
