There is not much to see and do at Mandawa.
Being so, the castle provides a complimentary ride on camels (at least we had it). It's a trip with about one hour, across the town and surrounding fields, where the most interesting thing is, really, the fun of the group joking with the uncomfortable movement of the camels.

It's a hotel run by the same king who owns the Castle Mandawa. The building structures are very special all in color of soil and white-line decoration. (desert style!) Especially the rond houses with grass roof and a tree in the middle are very lovely.

The highlights of the Shekhawati region are the thousands of typical residences (havelis) with naif paintings.
In Nawalgarh one palace has been carefully restored, and is now a museum. Without the splendors of the maharajah's palaces, it surely deserves the trip, showing another India, as a passage opportunity in silk's route.

There are many decrepit old houses here in Mandawa, and they are fun to explore. There are many hidden little details that make great pics, too. However, I feel sad for how the once magnificent houses have run down. They are now inhabited by very poor families who cannot afford to keep their houses in good condition at all. This is one of the typical contrasts of India. Read my warning tip about the guides before you take the tour.
The architecture of all the havelis is similar, although there are slight variations that I'm sure your guide will tell you about. Most have entrances into a courtyard, with rooms and stairwells off each wall. The back wall of the courtyard usually has an entrance to a larger, inner courtyard. The roofs are accessible by sets of narrow stairs, and afford good views of the town. Explore the tiny corridors reserved for servants and women, and peek through the screens from which the women of the house could secretly watch the goings on within!

In general 4 people share a vehicle. Friends could enjoy talking and seeing around together... But as the vehicle goes slowly and the seats are not as high as ones on camel, beggars follow and bother you easily...

It's a must-do activity in Rajasthan. Camels are huge animals and they have to knee down for people to get on/off. They are also the hardest moments because the big shakes could make people lose balance... But as camels are very mild animals, you wouldn't have to be scared. (They would only moan while kneeing down.) Just enjoy riding camel and seeing sunset in desert!

Situated in the silk's route this area is less monumental and opened to tourism, but it has plenty of naif paintings that are starting to attract visitors. And that means... development.
