night life: South India

by majul

My first night in India...(the naive person that I am)...my buddies and I decided to have some drinks. We asked around our hotel, and they suggested couple of "bars"...and thats what they were. Bars with just older men. They all looked at me weird, and I felt uncomfortable, even sitting with my male buddies. In general, I didn't see many women out after dark in Chennai unless we were at flea markets and restaurant areas. So we decided that best night time entertainment we could find is to visit markets, be bold and try different street foods (we were betting who'd last the longest without getting sick...), and see if there are any theater performances at community buildings etc.

Nightlife in India

by miguelle_guisson

In India the nightlife is of a different sort, for most of Indians nightlife means going out for Dinner, catching up a recent bollywood moivie or just a walk around the nearby market eating up the favourite dessert. But the nightlife in India is peppy too, mostly in big metropoitan cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Goa .. Most of the 5 star hotels have bar & dance floors, so you can join in, but you have t be properly dressed and most of the discs allow couple entry. Probably a good jeans will do.If you want to enjoy an authentic Indian nightlife, best is to stroll around the main market place of the city, you will find lots of people around, hop on & hop off many shops see the things you wanna buy, enjoy street side food ( though with caution & consultation with local people ).

Performing Art

Of all the classical art form of Kerala, Kathakali is the most popular and internationally familiar.I was lucky to have the privelege to experience Kathakali performance with a close guidance of Usha (VT:ushar), a Kathakali performer by herself. It happend on 31st October in Thiruvananthapuram and I'm glad to share it with you.(click the link).

Rajmandir cinema, Jaipur: a night at the movies

by pucela777

It is in every guide book, I know, but it is still an amazing experience that is not spoiled by tourism (that night we were the only foreigners among several hundreds of locals).I cannot say we understood completely the movie, although the argument seemed pretty simple, let alone the dialogues (in hindi), but the show was so much on this side of the stage as on the screen side: hundreds of enthusiastic locals cheering, singing and shouting at every turn of the movie, every appearance of the hot stars, every joke. Now I understand why indians like their own cinema so much: they want everything in a single movie: comedy, drama, musical, thriller, and famous faces. And they really know how to enjoy it.Furthermore, you can buy local food specialities inside the cinema and eat them while watching the movie. Excellent. All in all we had a great time, and the theater's architecture is already...

nightclubs

by npg

ok, it has been 12 months since i was in delhi so my memory is not so sharp, but the main thing to remember is that everything is usually closed by 1am, so no late night partys etc. if you want something more exciting than a 5 star bar, then ask any of your hotel staff to write down the name and location for some clubs/bars. these are worth the trip and are far more interesting than straight laced biz men trying to network in the 5 star bar! the local clubs seem to be more r'n'b inclined, and the bars seem relaxing with no hassels from working girls. otherwise all the 5 stars have good bars. the hyatt with djinns bar seemed quite nice with live band. a lot of hindi pop at dublins bar in the sheraton. although the local bars are far cheaper drink wise than the 5 stars.from memory, the 'defence colony' suburb had a lot of small bars and restaurants which i highly recommend checking...

Marnikarnika Ghat and Dasaswamedh Ghat are NOISY: Getting Sleep in Varanasi is Difficult.

by Hmmmm

The Dormitory of Shanti Guest house is open to the air. Punters and sheltered from the rain by a corrugated Iron Roof and from the Ferocious Monkeys by prison like bars as walls. So the senses are bombarded quite incredibly. Sleep is hard to get.Marnikarnika Ghat is the burning Ghat. the most auspicious place to be cremated in all of India. So 24 hours a day people are bringing bodies to be cremeted. Services, chants, and songs are sang all through the night, Right below Shanti Guesthouse.Meanwhile down the way in Dasaswamedh Ghat Pujas are sung through the night, wedding feasts happen daily (These are a very noisy affair).Lucky Shanti Guesthouse sells beer. Have a few of those and sleep comes easier.

A beer with a punch in the head.: Kingfisher Beer.

by Hmmmm

I thought I'd throw in a few ratings of Kingfisher beer:Jason ( East Boston, Massachusetts ) overall: 3.3Pale yellowish golden clear brew with a decent white lace.Light metallic aroma, with a clean hop and grain in the back. Light to moderate body with a lower than normal carbonation for a lager. Oily hop flavour hits first then some grainy malt, grassy in a way. A mediocre brew, I would not turn it down if someone offered it to me. Todd ( Cambridge, Massachusetts ) overall: 3.15 "Most thrilling chilled!", the label shouts. Appearance: Light golden with tiny bubbles, yielding a thin fizzy head. Smell: Semi-sweet with a distinct yeast aroma. Taste: The malt gives this a slight grainy taste which is followed by a refreshingly high lemon flavour and sour bitterness. Wonderful use of hops in this brew.Notes: There was a card on the table that went into some interesting detail of this brew. I...

The Bar Saaki in the Hotel Kalinga: A good place for a late night drink

by Paul2001

The bar at the Hotel Kalinga , the Bar Saaki was a great place to sip a Kingfisher beer after you travels. The bar was a bit dark but was not seedy as some Indian bars can be. Because of its location just 100m from the train station, lots of travelers come here to have a beer before they set off on late night trains. The bar is just inside to the right as you enter the hotel. Casual

The "blue waves" of Goa

by SirRichard

In Palolem Beach, south of Goa, you can see a marvellous phenomenon at night. If you stare at the waves in the beach, you can see that they shine in blue-greenish colors. This is due to some microscopic tiny organism which have fluorescence and make the waters shine. If you swimm at night there you will see your body all covered with tiny points of light. An unforgettable mystic experience!!!

The ghats (Varanasi) in the early morning

by SirRichard

Well, not in fact a nightlife, but I place it here as you have to get up in the middle of the night in order to take a boat down the river Ganges and see the city wake up in the river banks from the boat. The pilgrims start their day at the river banks steps, washing, praying and preparing tea with the watrs of the Holy River.
