Various Hotels: An Evening of Luxury

by Canadienne

Although we couldn't afford to stay at five-star hotels, treating ourselves to a drink or meal at the same places was within our range. This type of evening would typically be out of our budgets at home, so we made the most of it. Every few days, we would splurge on a special evening at a fancy hotel, being sure to take our time to enjoy and explore the gardens, patios and public spaces. There are some exquisite hotels in India and this is one way to get a peek inside, as well as to relax and treat yourself to something special. Fancy clothing isn't required, but even if you're backpacking, there's no excuse to not be clean and tidy.

Marine Drive, Mumbai: The Queen's Necklace

by Canadienne

Mumbai has plenty of great spots for late-night meals, drinks and dancing. If you're looking for a recommendation of which bar to hit, check in with VT member Amitu for some great advice.Otherwise, for some less expensive evening entertainment, try Marine Drive at night. A viewing during the day is also recommended, but nighttime reveals the reason for the nickname "The Queen's Necklace," as the stretch glitters with streetlights.A slow drive along here is beautiful. . .a walk as well, but you'll have some hassle (touts, beggars, etc.) to deal with. In the distance, you can spot Malabar Hill, home to some of the world's most expensive real estate.

Western Temples, Khajuraho: Son-et-Lumiere

by Canadienne

As cheesy as the idea may sound (one of my friends took some convincing before she agreed to go), the son-et-lumiere show at the Western Temples in Khajuraho is incredibly atmospheric and evocative. As an introduction to the group (try to time it before you visit), it whets the appetite to see the temples during daylight. . .and gives some history and legend surrounding their creation and discovery. Fold-out chairs are placed on the lawn inside the main complex and the show lasts an hour. When it finishes, check out the amazing display of stars overhead as well. It's nighttime and dark out, so wear what you like. If it's winter, bring a shawl to keep you warm. . .and don't foget mosquito repellent.

The Tavern Pub at the Fariyas Hotel: Decent Place for a Drink in Bombay

by Paul2001

India is not a country full of great bars however there are a few in Bombay. I ate one night in the Colaba district and found this bar nearby as recommended in my guidebook. It was actually a pretty good bar with lots of friendly locals, loud and good music and videos. It was one of the few bars in all of India where I saw Indian women drinking beer. Therefore Western women should not feel uncomfortable here if they are looking for a night out. Casual

Indian TV

by Crift

Since there wasn't any real nightlife in Delhi or any other places that I visited, I spent some time zapping. It was actually good fun! What I found more amusing was the soap operas as well as the music video clips. Their soap operas are based on macho men brutalizing women, and they fight back verbally... lots of tears in between. The acting is comically overanimated. The video clips are mostly based on a boy-loves-girl thing, singing and dancing about it.

The bar at the Hotel Nirulas: The bar at the Hotel Nirulas

by Paul2001

This is the best drinking hole I found in India. Delhi tends to be either the arrival or departure point of those traveling through India. Hence this bar is full of travelers who either about to begin their journey through India or other travelers who are just finishing up their trip and are eager exhange stories about it. Though I did not know it at the time apparently the name of the bar is Pegasus. Causal

Camping: PONMUDI HILLS

by dsantosh

Nice place to camp.....Hill resort near Trivandrum cityThe name Ponmudi, a hill station so close to the sea, in Malayalam means golden crown.Trekking to the north of Ponmudi Crest, one passes along a mini zoo, primarily of barasinghas, on the edge of the forest. Entering the forest, the verdant shades of green numb the senses. As does the avian orchestra. The brilliant red southern trongon dot the trees like flowers. . The shrill notes of the blue-black Malabar whistling thrush add to the cacophony. Even the rare long-tailed paradise flycatchers flit gracefully from tree to tree. It is like an open aviary. Ponmudi - Transportation-Buses are plying from Trivandrum to Ponmudi PRIME ATTRACTIONSOrchids: The beautiful flowers, the orchids thrive in wild profusion. Deer Park: A charming Deer Park is only 3 kms away from the resort. Golden Valley: It is a Pretty picnic spot, endowed with...

by sandravdp

Don't expect that you can go out late in India. Down north there are not many discos or bars. But you can visit the cinema in the evening. It's a real happening. People dance and sing and are really emotional while watching the movie. The movies are actionmovies or very romantic traditional movies. Also fun is going to a concert. You can sit back and relax. You get tea and hear drums and several snareinstruments. What I liked most was watching a ritual from a boat at night. In this ritual a holy man danced with fire and offered lights to the river Ganga. With some people of my travelgroup we also offered 200 little candles -floating on the water-. It was really beautiful to see. After this ritual it is already 9pm but then you can still have dinner anywhere -and so I did- until late

by Shelleya

View of Ganges River in VaranasiTake a boat ride down the river at dawn and at dusk. There are hundreds of men offering rides along the ghats (banks) so you will find one easily. Depending on your bartering skills, you should be able to find a ride for about 20-40 rupees. These guys work hard rowing, so don't feel bad if you don't get the best rate.
