Scenes from daily life IX: Ageold rituals

by Rupanworld

Here are some photos taken from ageold rituals in the villages of India. Young children carrying water on decorated structures and walking barefooted uphill to pour that water on the head of a deity. This takes place every year and band of little boys playing certain musical instruments like drums, follow the procession of little girls dressed in saree.

Scenes from daily life VIII: Shoeshine man

by Rupanworld

Shoe shinemen are very common to see in India, on roadsides, railway platforms, outside super markets and malls and everywhere. They diligently do their work, putting every effort to ensure that your shoe shines like new and what they get in return ranges from Rs 2 (1 euro cent) to Rs. 5 (2.5 euro cent) per pair depending upon the cost of living of a city.

Touch the tip of the INDIAN PENINSULA

by vpas

Kanya Kumari is in the state of Tamilnadu(Madras or Chennai(new name) is the capital of Tamilnadu)Kanyakumari which is at the tip of the Indian peninsula can be reached from Kerala and Tamilnadu by road or by train. It is both a touristic place as well as a pilgrim centre. It is famous for the Kanyakumari(virgin Goddess) temple.Of special mention is the nose ring of the deity in the temple that shines bright as a flame. In olden days it saved many a ship from getting wrecked on the shore, since it saved the purpose of a light house and warned the approaching ships of the shore nearby. One could take a boat ride to the Vivekananda rocks which is in a small island located at a very short distance from the mainland of India, near Kanyakumari.Kanyakumari is also a special place to watch the sunset and sunrise. It is indeed a sight to behold the sunrise and sunset along the Indian ocean.Vpas

SONAGIR (MP) JAIN TEMPLES + ELEPHANTS

by vaticanus

No, this is not a construction left over from a movie by Fellini. This is an assembly/theatre structure. Sonagir is a MAJOR pilgrimage site for the Jain- an offshoot, like Buddhism, of Hinduism. It's a small detour off the tourist route that runs south from Agra to Gwalior to Orchha to Kajuraho. Use the train connecting New Delhi through Gwalior to JHANSI - The crossroads of central India- and get a connection to SONAGIR. From the Sonagir train station you will see the towers of DOZENS of temples and shrines set on a craggy outcropping. There are many tribals living in the area which boasts the largest concentration of elephants in India. You can walk around the entire city of temples on a special trail (about an hour). The surroundings are impressive as are the changing views of the different buildings rising out of the cliffs above. Of course, you are welcome to visit the temples too.

Visit some of the temples with Kumbhalgarh Fort

by Paul2001

While I was visiting Kumbhalgarh Fort I decided to wander around the fortress walls for a short walk. To be honest I wished I had spent more time here to do this as in no time I came across this interesting Jain Temple. I came across it a couple hundred meters from the main compound. I entered the temple to discover a lonely old guardian who greeted me with great enthusiasm and showed me. The temple was small and relatively plain for a Jain temple but it was quite old, dating from the 13th century. Kumbhalgarh Fort is full of such temples and there is said to be 300 of them. If you a have a full day here you might be able to see many of them and it is recommend that you attempt to see some.

The Lodi Gardens in New Delhi

by Paul2001

The Lodi Gardens were the most pleasant surprise out of the attractions I visited in New Delhi. They do not get much publicity compared to other sites in the city but they are well worth a visit. The Lodi Gardens is a large park were there are a collection of large tombs built during the Mughal dynasty. This makes for a splendid outing for New Delhi families. There were many having picnics during my visit. Because the Lodi Gardens are located in neighborhood that would be best regarded as "privilaged", the locals tend to be decidedly middle and upper class Indians. Still I did run into one hawker here but I guess they are everywhere in India. There are several remarkable tombs here. The most noteworthy are Bara Gumbad, which features a wonderful large dome and the Shish Gumbad which has a smaller glazed dome. There are several other small but attractive domes here tooA visit to the Lodi...

The Cenotaphs of Orchha

by Paul2001

As you walk east along the road from Orchha you come across a collection of cenotaphs. These were built in the 17th century and seem to be somewhat neglected. Compared to the other attractions in Orchha there were few visitors. Six of the cenotaphs are actually quite large, being about two stories tall. I climbed up onto the second floor in a couple of these and found that I had to twist quite a bit to get through the pathways. To be honest there was little within them worth seeing. To get a decent photograph of them, cross the nearby bridge and climb up on to the bolders along the length of the river. This makes for a decent image. The cenotaphs were in fact are memorials for the local rulers.
