try the apple country

by shoma

when in india try the apple town called kulu valley in the himalayas. off the main city is a little village called seobagh, literally meaning apple orchards.what a delightful place it is with some homestays, no hotels, the river bear meandering through, some heavenly secluded waterfalls where one can bathe everyday...one can even do some gentle river rafting in the river waters thereseobagh has a perfumery too, a distilled water plant and this brings some jobs to the local youth. the buddhist monastery is a visual delight and the biggest in this area. my little friend wangchuk studies in it and rest of the time walks on the mountains with other friends singing songs and chewing gum!!!try seobagh someday. it gives apples a whole new meaning.

Harrapan Ruins

by camdenjohn

In Gujarat, in the middle of nowhere, are the ruins of an Indus Valley civilization at a place called Lothal. If its restoration is faithful to the archeological evidence, it demonstrates an extraordinary engineering capacity in 2500 bce, including some innovations found rarely enough inDelhi and Bombay - underground plumbing! The site also features what proports to be a drydock. On the way back by a long, straight highway my neck suddenty jerked backwards by the sit of a totally nude man standing by the side of the road. My guide laughted and said, "Oh, that's only a Jain. Some of them don't wear clothes." I replied, "I got a pretty good look, and I'm certain that was no Jane. That was a Jack!"One caution: beward of eating lunch in a "dhaba". I did and got deathly ill. But I had been in India only 2 months at the time and after a while the bugs don't bother you anymore.

The Archeological Museum in Gwalior

by Paul2001

While approaching the renown fortress in Gwalior, I came across a young lady standing in front of a very fine palace, the Gujuri Mahal. She wanted me to go inside and visit the museum, for it seems that few foreigners do. I was actually hoping to see the archeological museum housed in the Gujuri Mahal, so I was more than happy to allow the young lady to drag me in. The museum is well worth seeing as it has an excellent collection of centuries old Indian sculpture. A sad fact about India is that there is dirth of quality museums in the country and this was one of the best I came across. Virtually all of the museum pieces are in the courtyard so it is all sun lit which was great on the bright day that I visited Gwalior on.The Gujuri Mahal is located on the bottom edge of this photograph next to the very fine mosque. Beyond is the old town of Gwalior itself which is set apart from the rest...

The Jain Temple In Sanganer

by Paul2001

I rented a car and driver through my hotel for half a day while I was in Jaipur. My destination was the famous Jain Temples in Sanganer, located 12 kilometers south of Jaipur. I visited the largest temple in the town which was the home of the famed Sun-clad Jains. If you cannot figure it out by their names these people go around in their birthday suits. This is because in no way are they to exploit or use animal products or even products produced by insects such as silk. Therefore no clothing. I did not see any of these folks when I was at the temple. Needless to say they do not come out much.Like almost all Jain temples this one was exquisitely decorated with very fine carvings and well worth seeing. To enter you must remove all clothing containing leather like belts. Shoes and socks are also removed. Of note it was outside of this temple, on a nearby street, where I had my pig incident...

Coconut - All the necessities of life

by FruitLover

All parts of the coconut palm are useful and have economic value. The name for the coconut palm in Sanskrit is kalpa vriksha, which translates as "the tree which provides all the necessities of life". Uses of the various parts of the palm include:-The white, fleshy part of the seed is edible and used fresh or dried in cooking. -The cavity is filled with "coconut water" containing sugars, fibre, proteins, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. Coconut water is sterile until the coconut is opened.-Coconut milk is made by processing grated coconut with hot water or hot milk. -The flower clusters of the coconut is fermented to produce palm alcoholic "toddy". -The interior of the growing tip may be harvested as heart-of-palm and is considered a rare delicacy - "millionaire's salad". -The coir is used in ropes, mats, brushes, caulking boats and as stuffing fibre.-Copra is the dried meat of the...

Snake charmers

by FruitLover

Snake Charmer (sapurey) handle the snakes by music and other activities. It was traditionally a family business and the art of snake charming was passed on from one generation to the other. The secrecy behind it was well-guarded.Believe it or not, it's me on the picture. It's not a recommendation to try it. Be careful and don't trust the Snake Charmers. As far as I know, there is no official supervising on this activity, and no guarantee that the Cobras are really harmless.More Pictures
