The Baroli Temple near Kota

by Paul2001

The Baroli temple which is about 45 minutes by car from Kota. It is quite beautiful with great carvings yet I was the only tourist here. It is rarely visited by tourists from abroad. In fact I was the only traveler there. The owner of my hotel advised me that few Westerners do make this way. It is a shame because Baroli was one of the most sticking Hindu temple structures that I visited in India. The 13 building temple complex is spread about and much of it is ruins. Still you can take in some of the superbly carved reliefs that are laid out for your view. Baroli Temple is a very old complex even by Indian standards, having been built in the 9th century. To get to Kota, I rented a car and driver arranged at my hotel in Kota. It took about 30 minutes to get via a road through some pretty countryside. A story about this photograph: While I was exploring the temple grounds with the...

Rural India - Deep south

by ganku

Rural southern India is fascinating. Mountains , water falls, temples and many simple things like road side tender coconuts and village schools. The pictures are from Kallidaikurichi, a small town near Cape comerin. Some 10 hrs by train from Chennai (cost $4 for an overnight train trip). From Chennai take an overnight train to Tirunelvelli, some 10 hrs by overnight train.(Nellai Exp, Kannyakumari Exp form Chennai Egmore). Visit Nellaiappar temple, get a room and relax. If you think Tirunellvelli is not a city.. Hang on. If you are adventerous , take a bus to Kallidaikurichi - I prefer the train. The train station is so quiet and if you skip on the peak rush hour, you can see some cool scenary from the train. Tirunelvelli Chengottai/Quilon train will do it. Once in Kallidaikurichi, get a room in the only hotel in the village for $10 a night. If you are white expect to pay more. This is...

The Jain Sculptures in Gwalior Fort

by Paul2001

On the South side of Gwalior, just inside of the gateway are a serious of amazing Jain sculptues that had been cut into the cliffside. Some of these sculptures are huge standing over 17m high. The carvings were originally cut in the 15th century. The images are divided into 5 groups leading down the road to the gate. They are all in a remarkable state of preservation. What sort of struck me as odd about the sculptures is that I was not only the soul Westerner there observing them, I was the only person there at all except for some school kids who simply walked down the road not giving a hoot for the sculptures. Too many people seem to pass up these stunning sculptures along with the Fort itself as they rush through India.

The Jagdish Temple in Udaipur

by Paul2001

Because of its location just 150m north of the City Palace in Udaipur most people drop in on the Jagdish Temple. For me what drew me into visiting the temple was the music being sung and played at the time. There was some sort of Hindu ceremony going on at the time and the temple was packed with worshipers. This created a great atmosphere at the time but beyond that the temple itself was hardly memorable when compared to all the other temples that I visited during my journey. Actually what was memorable was getting too close to that elephant in the foreground and being smacked in the head with its tail. It hurt!

The battle of Kurukshetra

by jorgejuansanchez

If you love India and its philosophy you should not miss Kurukshetra, where took place the famous battle, theme of the epic poem of the Bhagavad Gita, written by the rishi Veda Vyasa. It s located in Haryana, and you can stop there in your journey from Delhi to Pakistan or vice versa.I reached Kurukshetra by train and asked to the sadhus for the place of the battle, and they sent me to Jyotisar, about seven kilometres further. I walked there and stayed three days and nights with the sadhus in an ashram with a pool. I was one more of them. Everyday the faithful Hindus brought us food and sweets as prasaad for the pujas. According to my sadhus friends, a sacred banyan tree that was standing in the ashram was eternal, and the only surviving witness of the battle of Kurukshetra between the kauravas and pandavas, that lasted 18 days, like the chapters of the holy book.Jyotisar is for the...

Roza Bal. The tomb of the Great Prophet

by jorgejuansanchez

After having participated in the Shiva Linga Festival in the cave of Amaranth, Kashmir, with thousands of Hindu pilgrims, I was enjoying Srinagar Kanyar district when I saw a kind of temple surrounded by a fence. I went inside and read a sign with Arabic characters and a title in English saying: ROZA BAL. YOUSA ASF. An improvised guide appeared from nowhere and explained me that Yousa Asf was for the Kashmir people the same than Isa was for the Arabs, that is, Jesus Christ.Inside there was a 3 metres long coffin, being, allegedly, 2000 years old, with an inscription on a marble plaque in Hebrew and a big footprint. It was protected by powerful iron bars. Indian Government does not allow investigating about that mysterious coffin.According to my “guide”, Yousa Asf was a great Prophet, native of Israel, who performed many miracles and preached a doctrine of love. He assured that he was...

BEAUTIFUL MUGHAL PALACE IN DATIA (MP)

by vaticanus

DATIA (MP) can be included in a road trip from: THE TAJ MAHAL-ORCHHA- KHAJURAHO. Datia is most famous for the enormous five storied GOVIND MANDIR PALACE that dominates the Datia skyline. The photo shows one of the ceiling murals in one of its innumerable chambers. The attraction of this palace is it's graceful bridges and balanced composition. The palace resists any quick look and, in my opinion, is much more pleasing to wander in than the palace at Orchha. There are several other large structures in Datia, but one of them is used by the police (off limits) and another is used for apartments. Accomodations are very basic in Datia but I can recommend the Shri Raghunath-Gunga Hotel (PH: 07522) at the busstop on Station Rd opposite the famous Peetambra Peeth Temple.

live !ndia

by sweety3

We rented a driver for the whole stay, we arranged our own visits indipently and we were part of any group. The reason was "EXPERIENCE" daily life and stay close to the local people. Indians are great and with a great sense of hospitality. Once in Kottayam, while standing under the sun awaing for "52 Elephant procession", we were invited to have a cup of tea and cake. We did , we took the shoes off and spent the afternoon chating with this family. Conversation was great...only one lady could speak some english, but it was great and left a fond memory. Than, we went in town, no other european except the four of us. We both sarees in a not tourist shop and we had good deals of understanding this magnificent ladies that are the real pride of India The next day we decided to have a rest holiday by the beach. This was full of boys and girls and we discovered that they where there on School...

Achalgarh near Mount Abu

by Paul2001

Achalgarh is located 13km north of Mount Abu. It is hear that Achaleshwar Mahandeva is located (and which I have another seperate tip) as is a wonderfully situated tank. At the edge of the tank are three stone buffaloes. Legend has it that the tank was at onetime filled with ghee and that the buffaloes polluted it before being shot by arrows from a King. At the south edge of the tank there are very popular cafes and restaurants that serve so-so food. It seems to be a great place for a family outing for Indian families. I also some wildlife by way of a mongoose at the edge of the tank.
