'Bharata Natyam' - dance in the temple

by FruitLover

'Bharata Natyam', sacred dance as a religious ceremony, is very much appreciated by the gods. Shiva, under the name of Nataraja, the 'Lord of the Dance', with either a fearsome or a light step governs the rhythm of the unfolding of the Universe. And Parvati, His slim-waisted consort, taught this art to humans.'Bharata Natyam' , in the Tamil land, involves not only dance but also chanting, music and dramatic miming. The great dancing masters and the consecrated dancers have handed it down from century to century in the temples to which they belong.Towards the end of the 19th century it gradually disappeared under the Puritan pressure of the British. From 1925 onwards, and especially after independence, great Indian artists, in search of their cultural rootes, are reviving the ancient sacred dancing

DESAVATARA TEMPLE IN DEOGARH (UP)

by vaticanus

Deogarh offers river cliffs with hermit caves, protected forests, bird watching, a medieval fort, a huge complex of Jain temples, and what may be the finest surviving example of Gupta architecture and sculpture- The Dasavtara Temple. There is a government Tourist Bungalow and a decent road from Lalitpur and the train station connecting Delhi and Bhopal. You can find out more about this location at my travel page DEOGARH:http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/22fa8/10c838/

Volunteer your skills in Mcleod Ganj

by largerama

Offer your skills particularly if you are a good English speaker or competent with computers. The Tibetan and Indian people of the Dharamsala region need your help in all sorts of ways even if just practising their speaking. You will then in turn meet these people and learn about their culture, religion, etc. Very rewarding as they are so eager to learn.Even if you dont get a response from the website just turn up. It will be worth it. The office is on the Jogibara Road.

RIDING WITH THE RAJAS

by markeveleigh

You ride through the kingdoms of Jaipur and Shekhawati experiencing the life of subsistence farmers here, and princes there. You overnight in palaces, forts, pilgrims’ inns and tented camps and spend the days in crossing wonderful country on the locally bred Marwari horses which, with their distinctive curled ears and gallant characters, are themselves considered princes of the horse world.

by tonirvana

<< Hampi >> Not easy to get there. Long long train+bus trips but worthy ^.^ There's a Hippy-village-like place across the river and full moon party, which was not frantic at the time I stayed there. It's been rapidly changing in a commercial way. But, still worthy to stay as long as time allows enjoying the atmosphere .

The Clock Tower in Jodhpur

by Paul2001

When you visit Jodhput you will find yourself drawn in on the old Clock Tower. The clock was built during the Raj and pin points the town's main square and commerical heart. The clock tower is surrounded by food stalls that attracts both locals and tourists alike. It had some of the most pleasant atmosphere that I experienced in India. There are also astonishing views of the fort dominating the skyline overhead. All I could say was "Wow!". It left me speechless. On a negative note, I found this square the most frustrating place in India with regards to hawkers pesting me for "conversation". Get to the point buddy. I do not have the time for small talk as you attempt to get me purchase some trivial junk.

Nakki Lake at Mount Abu

by Paul2001

One day God scooped out a hole on Mount Abu with but a nail. The word for nail in Hindi is nakh hence the name of the lake that formed out of where God dug his hole. Today the lake is surrounded by rather odd rock formations and parks. Honeymooning couples come here and rent rowboats and cruise about the lake. On the shores towards the town of Mount Abu are juice stalls, ice-cream parlours, balloon vendors, souvenir shops and small food stalls. You can walk around the lake with ease and I found the whole place rather pleasant after the hassle of Udaipur.

Chittorgarh Fort Palace

by Paul2001

Located by the western gate is Chittorgarh Fort's ruined main palace. It was built between 1433 to 1468 by Rana Kumbha who is credited with actually founding the fortress. The ruins contain many chambers and halls but it is difficult to imagine the onetime splendor of the place. Outside of the palace are the ruins of other houses where minor nobles would have lived. If touring the Chittor Fort by taxi like me this will be the first of the fort's attractions that you will visit.

Largest Jain Temple in India

by straehle

The Jain temple complex at Ranakapur is about a three hour bus ride from Udiapur or Delwara (see hotel tips). On the way one passes through villages and rice paddies. The temple complex is really one of a kind. The one image here doesn't really do it justice. There are more images on my web site at http://straehle.smugmug.com/gallery/484592/1/19755072

Rohtang Pass,Around Manali

by manil51

Rohtang Pass is 51 km from manali, At an altitude of 3,978 metres on the highway to Keylong, the mass affords a wide-spread panorama of mountain scenery. Here eye meets a range of precipitous cliffs, huge glaciers and piled moraine and deep ravines. To the opposite is the well defined 'Sonepani Glacier' slightly to the left are the twin peaks of the Geyphang snow crowned. The Beas river rises near the crest of Rohtang from a block of Mica-Schist. To its left, 200 metres higher, is the little lake of 'Sarkund' ( Dashahr ) visited by a large number of people every year. The bath in the water of Sarkund lake effects cure of all bodily ailments or imaginary. The pass is open from June to October each year but it's better to check the weather first. If it's rain, the road can be very dangerous and without any visibilty from the pass.
