Pack light!

by ChartIt

no more then 1 suitcase, you have to be able to care it everywhere. In Janurary you should wear jeans and tshirts more often then not a light cardigan and or long sleeve shirt will help. Have good walking shoes, but not expensive shoes. And it does rain, but we were there during the dry season so we didnt really pack for rain. You should bring conservative clothing. Women bring your own pads or tampoons or consider going for the DivaCup. Indian femine products are not very good. Bring things Imodieum, and tumbs, vitimans. And any other personal medication. Bring ANTI MALARIAL DRUGS!! Digital camera with as much memory as you can afford. A light jacket or fleece for January is appropriate Bring some scarf so that you can cover your hair when you enter into temples.

Backpacking Musts

by JohnniOmani

You should def take a bag that is not overly large if you plan to be on the road for several months as I did as well as most travellers. I highly recommend a 50 L pack as anything bigger than this and you will be struggling to transport it on buses and in hill stations. Avoid army green as it is a sensitive color in the northern military zones. Underweard and swimming gear, a pair of cotton pants, and a pair of shorts for women, one or two long skirts for women, a few t shirts, a sweater for northern areas, one pair of sandals or flip flops, fold up umbrella, wide brimmed hat and dress up clothes for the nights out on the town. you can find just about anything in India but you should stock up on personal items that are tough to find like hard to find contact lenses or specific lotions that you may require during your trip. I highly recommend tiger balm (works miracles) and ear plugs...

super glue & probiotics

try stay to minimum amount of litres if travelling on public transport..makes life easier. I have only a small 30 litre back pack.. perfect! always have more than one pair of footware. both times i've travelled i had footwear stolen outside my accomodation. also breakages happen but usually a bit of super glue can aid. soap a must. but in india you're in the tropics! take antiseptic cream and antibiotic cream. I use hydrogen peroxide to clean bites and wounds..then keep 'em clean. A tiny bite or scratch can quickly turn nasty. have a good case to protect your valuable camera. I have a neck strap attached to my digital so i cannot drop camera or have it easily snatched from me.. no real need for camping gear in india always a place to stay..unless high season in some areas or andaman islands which are becoming increasingly busy with both foreign and indian tourists. if your cell...

Clothes

by tayloretc

In India, clothes describe the wearer. The way a sari is pleated says everything about the background of an individual. There’s a very real double standard for men and women. Generally, men are allowed to look like slobs, and even the best western styles look like US bowling-league castoffs circa 1962. If men want to wear knee-length cargo shorts and wife-beaters, it won’t look too out of place.Women aren’t as lucky, although Indian friends don’t see it that way (“We get to wear pretty clothes!”). Southern India is hot most of the time, but skin-baring clothes aren’t received well. Women should stick with ¾ or longer slacks or skirts, and straps more substantial than spaghetti are advisable. Plan on buying clothes once you arrive. Ready-made kurtas are available everywhere, and are inexpensive, lightweight, and comfortable. (Try a sari at your own risk. They’re more difficult to wear...

Shoes

by tayloretc

If you’re planning to do any walking, remember these things when choosing your shoes. In southern India the roads are uneven and unevenly paved, are always dirty with stuff you don’t want to think too hard about, and sharp and/or rusty surprises are not uncommon. It’s really hot, and when it rains, it really rains, and the water gathers, sometimes to above your ankles.Don’t bring shoes you like too much. Your best bet is some kind of well-fitting hiking sandal with a good thick sole that you can strap to your feet at all points to avoid losing them in mud or deeper water. (I’m partial to Chaco Z(X)/2s with unaweep soles.)(The Western Ghats are much cooler, so a good, light hiking boot or shoe is preferable there.)

Essentials For Packing

by RAJASTHANBYCAR

In India, delicate fabrics do not stand up well to laundering facilities except at deluxe hotels. Plain cottons or cotton/synthetic blends are the most practical and the coolest in summer. It's best to avoid synthetic fabrics that don't 'breathe'.Electronic Gadgets For electric-powered equipment, bring a converter and an adapter. The electrical current in India is 220 volts, 50 cycles alternating current (AC), wall outlets take plugs with two round prongs. For protection from the harsh sun a hat with a wide brim is recommended. When traveling during monsoons, a collapsable umbrella comes handy. During the winter months, sweaters and light jackets are required. For functions carry formal suits for men and skirts and tops for women. To enter a holy shrine, women should wear a long skirt or dress or trousers. Travel in a Muslim community calls for even more discretion. Women should...

The actresses in those Bollywood movies may dress revealingly but in actual fact, Indians in general are not so scantily clad... To avoid being stared at, females are advised to dress appropriately.. and well, erm.. they do like to stare.. a lot...

Hot to trot

by NEILHALLIDYA

Bring immodium and antibitotics for "the runs". Take all the precautions. If you cant peel it or cook it dont eat it. Avoid dairy products. Be carefull with regard to meat, is it fresh. But no matter how hard you try you are likely to suffer at least one episode while in India so bring those precautions. Bring a polarising filter - its bright and dusty.

Calendars Make Perfect Gifts

by vaticanus

Gather up all those free calendars you see in December. You can't bring too many calendars --so only show them if you plan to give them away. However, judiciously handed out, you will make a big hit with whomever you hand a twelve month illustrated calendar from your home country. Before you leave on your trip, start collecting them. You will never be forgotten. A WORD OF CAUTION: Don't hand one to a person in a group- fair is fair. Like I said "judiciously" and you won't inadvertently hurt anyone's feelings.

Pack Some Photos of Family and Friends

by vaticanus

In India, family is all-important. Make sure you have photos of your parents, brothers, sisters, near relations, and grandparents. Show them to your fellow travellers on trains, while waiting for a bus, and always to the curious who will gather around you especially in small towns- closeups are best. Protect the photos by inserting them into plastic sleeves because they will get passed around and handled a lot.
