[ask at your local camera shop if they will give you their empty film canisters for sealing tablets with instructions. keeps them waterproof and blister packs can be cut up to save space. also, if you are a smoker, keep one as a no butts ash tray for hotel rooms and environmentally sensitive areas. be wary of buying medication abroad - try to get recognised brands if poss., use larger city pharmacies and be esp. careful if the instructions cannot be translated. most should be in english as well as the indigenous language.]

Where To Start?

by travelinxs

Having found packing such a headache, I thought an extensive pack list might help others starting out. This is far from exhaustive and only personal to myself and if you can cut it down your life will be easier. It appears under each country destination, adjusted accordingly, so you might want to skip it in future or just refer to the Notes On... at the bottom. Women will obviously have to tweak this a little, such as add tampons and sanitary towels and sports bras for those camel treks and delete sleeping bag and replace with chocolate! (sorry, only joking)NB: Items followed by ** are substantially cheaper in this country compared to, for example, the UK, without a large sacrifice in quality. If I am unsure of the availability or I feel it might be a hassle to find, I have left ** off. Remember that shopping in a local market is a lot more fun than in M&S back home and you could save...

This is the best tip for India. Period.

Bring a travel-sized bottle of instant hand sanitizer and small packets of tissues. You'll be many places without toilet paper, so that's what the tissue is for, but you'll also be shaking hands with people and using facilities and touching things that just aren't hygenic. I was in India for a month and stayed healthy the whole time I was there. And I give all the credit to the hand sanitizer.

Medicines are not medicines

by kumgang

If you have some kind of disease, and you need to take some medicine, please bring it with you when you go to India. There is a great problem with the false medicine (adulterated) and if you are in a need, probably you can die if you don´t take the right thing, so if you use to take some pills, bring it with you. In New Delhi you can find even memory cards, specially at Connaught PLace. Good prices.

Raincoat or umbrella?

by SirRichard

If you come in monsoon, be sure that you will have some rain sometime. I brought both a plastic anorak and an umbrella, but ended up using only the umbrella. The weather here is so humid that if you were a plastic raincoat, you will end up more wet by sweat than by rain.

Bring as little as possible. This can't be overemphasized. Most guest houses will hook you up with a local laundry person who will take your clothes, beat the tar out of them, and return them clean as a whistle for a low price. So take few articles of clothing, and expect them to receive rough treatment. Carrying a flashlight and mosquito repellent (strong stuff) is also a good idea. Reading material is easy to find in second-hand book vendors in the major towns.Safety tip: bring a combination lock, a good one. Many of the cheaper hotels don't have locks on their doors, so you need your own. Combination locks are more difficult to jimmy than key locks.Don't ask me why I put this photo here: I simply couldn't find a more suitable one, so I thought this could be a pretty photo!!
