Pack light

by SirRichard

Bring as little as possible. This can't be overemphasized. Most guest houses will hook you up with a local laundry person who will take your clothes, beat the tar out of them, and return them clean as a whistle for a low price. So take few articles of clothing, and expect them to receive rough treatment. Carrying a flashlight and mosquito repellent (strong stuff) is also a good idea. Reading material is easy to find in second-hand book vendors in the major towns.Safety tip: bring a combination lock, a good one. Many of the cheaper hotels don't have locks on their doors, so you need your own. Combination locks are more difficult to jimmy than key locks.Don't ask me why I put this photo here: I simply couldn't find a more suitable one, so I thought this could be a pretty photo!!

The Bed Test

by SirRichard

A good way of knowing if you are taking too much stuff with you when you make your luggage is to spread all the items on a single bed (double if you pack for 2). If all the items fit on the bed size, you are taking the right amount!

Visas

by TomorrowsAngel

Six month multiple-entry visas are now issued to most nationals regardless of whether you intend staying that long or re-entering the country. Only six-month tourist visas are extendable. Most Indian embassies and consulates won't issue a visa to enter India unless you hold an onward ticket. Be careful to check whether your visa is valid from the date of entry or the date of issue.

Don't take too much!

by piglet44

Take as little as possible! Everything in India is cheaper than at home. MOst of the stuff we took would have been better to buy over there- toothpaste, shampoo etc. YOu really only need minimum amount of light clothes and your toothbrush! And of course your anti-malarial pills. But don't take mosquito spray it is also cheaper in India.

A mosquito net is the first thing to buy.

If you plan to go by train, don´t forget a chain, and a good, sturdy western lock with hardened steel, to secure your luggage. Mosquito repellant and a net are a must, the indian mosquitos are worse than scottish midgets! I can recomend ODOMOS, It´s an indian Mosquito repellant, you can get anywhere localy, and it´s very skin friendly, based on ayurvedic ingredients. Also good for small children.Steel-nails are good to hang up the net by the way. A torchlight is a MUST. Many towns and villages don´t have public lighting, and you can easily fall into a muck-hole or the sewer system, not seeing where you are going. The cigaret rolling papers in india are terrible! You lick of the glue, and the cigarete falls apart. So don´t lick them sideways, press the paper directly onto your tongue, not moving it sideways.

Quite alot aint there?

right then:drawstring bag - no accessbig suitacase - keep reading, ull need it! clothes - all sorts, it can be hot or coldshoes - dont take brand new shoes, theyll just get dirty, same goes for trainersheadgear - hats may be useful, and respectful malaria tablets - and take them regularlymosquito repellent - useful no matter what time you gotoilet roll - can be bought but safe to bring some for a few days. most toilets have it but there are a few places that dont take bottled water, you can again buy it from there but its safer to take at least one bottle, never drink from the water there, always bottled water or boiled water gone cold

Go Easy on what you bring!

by Vintom

For me being a bit of a backpacker all I needed was a good quality rucksack! Sandals are a must and one decent pair of walking shoes as you will end up doing a lot of walking! Most of these can be bought in India, only bother to pack what you think you will need in the short term. Only the major cities have reputable photographic shops! So if you don't want to take a chance on film that has been sitting around in the heat for god knows how long I would bring your own in a cool bag if you have one. Slide film is hard to get anywhere! A single sheet sewn to make a sleeping bag is a good idea should you end up somewhere there are no sheets, or you don't like the look of them. Why not pack tee shirts e.t.c. that you might be fed up with and then give these to the porters e.t.c. at hotels who would be only to pleased with them. Lightens you load as you go also. You can buy more if needed...

Survival kit for Indian weather

by yumiyun

Cotton clothes are the best for hot weather. You can also purchase them in India. Avoid sythetic fabrics that doesn't absorb sweat, you will suffer. Unless you are in big hotels and spots foreigners frequently visit, it's a good idea to carry your own toilet papers. Sun block, sunglasses, hut, umbrella or anything else that can protect you from the sun!
