The local Dhabas: Eat Street Food!

by polardabar Updated Sep 25, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I'm sure everyone who went to India has been told not to eat in the street! Well, that's reasonable if you have a bad digestion or something, but you're missing out so much!

The best food you can get is exactly in the street, in the local dhabas, where they make the food the real Indian way. If you eat in westernized restaurants, you will get westernized food, less spices & higher price. In dhabas you basically get what the locals get, which definitely makes it tastier, better & more natural.

Of course, I don't mean that you should eat in dhabas only - I mean, everyone deserves a decent meal - but if you're looking for something real Indian [and you're out of money], dhabas are the thing! Don't get intimidated by the looks, it's all hand-made, fire-cooked & water-washed...

Favorite Dish: The street vendors have all kinds of sweets, but if you're looking for a munch just to keep you going, take some fabulous samosa or something like that. If you're looking for a full lunch, there's always thali or rajma, which is always perfect!

I remember there were some restaurants that gave as-much-as-you-can-eat for 50 INR! Take the opportunity & live India!
