    The Holy Ghats

    Holy Ghat

DO NOT ever take the flowers from holymen even offered for FREE. Take off your shoes when entering the ghat, and from there you are likely to face with ‘fake’ holymen who try to take you in the Hinduism ritual something. Start with a handful of petals, saying “No money, no money it’s a gift,” followed by a pray, Holy Bhrama Holy Vishnu Holy Ganesh I’m giving a donation of 100 Rupees……WHAT !?! Then they say "You promised Gods and you cannot betray Gods" which sounds a little scary to me. Anyway, only give donation if you really ‘feel like’ doing so or just try to walk away – no guilt.

Fun Alternatives: Go to smaller ghats, away from touts and other tourists

    Holy men

by PeteG Updated Jan 24, 2008

Me sporting (unsucessful) holy man deterant!

If you are by the lake you may be approached by a holy man. He will take you down to the lakes edge and want to bless you.

Nothing wrong with this. However, they seem to want loads of money for giving you this blessing!

Unique Suggestions: Often they will ask 2000 rupees, but according to a guide we met, giving 100 rupees is fine.

Fun Alternatives: If you are staying in one of the campsites and you don't want to get involved in blessings etc, they will give you a wristband and "dot" your forehead to make it look like you have already been blessed. The idea of this being to put off the holy men. See the photo for that look!

Once you begin to talk them they will ask you to make their pictures and they tell you that are gypsy girls from village.

These girls also hold your hand and start making tatoo design with henna. Once you take their picture they will start asking you for money or let you to a tea shop and they will try to convince you for money to support their children and many stories.

Unique Suggestions: In case you are in this trap try to say no thanks and smile to them.

    Rickshaw commisions

by schlumpf Written Jan 21, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Another very common thing that will definitely happend to you during your stay in India is this: You will take somewhen a rickshaw or whatever to reach a site, and they will definitely bring you in some shop (a shop of a friend or a brother or whatever). Keep in mind that the owner of the shop will pay the driver a commision cuz he brought there some tourist and clearly the prices of the goods will increase...
So, be strong and tell to the driver that you will not leave the rickshaw! This is the only thing that works out...

    Puja

by feelthevibe Written Jun 4, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

On arrival in Pushkar you will be expected to take a puja, which is a small Hindu ceremony performed down on the ghatts on the lake, after the Puja you will have a bracelet of red and yellow fibre tied around your wrist to testify you have been blessed.

Unique Suggestions: The Puja itself I found a very pleasent experience even though i am not the religeous type, You will be pestered to take this Puja until you have the bracelet so it makes sense to arrange for a Brahmin known to the hotel you stay at to perform it for you, this way saves the hassle of being pestered. After the Puja you will be asked to pay the priest, this is the sticky one , he will ask for an extortionate amount so try be diplomatic and pay only what you think is fair for the experience, I paid 100 rupees and was told this was too much so don`t let him give you any sob stories, they really can make you feel guilty so don`t crumble easy
