Saffron and other great spice buys

by Marthamaire

CochinIn the market for spices? Wait until you reach Cochin to buy them. Cochin is known for its fine spices. You can obtain saffron, and other such things that are high priced in the US, for a pittance. You can trust vendors in the larger outdoor markets but if you aren’t willing to do that, you can still obtain great deals in supermarkets. If you are into photography, the shots you can get at the outdoor Indian markets are wonderful. So colorful! Baskets and baskets of brightly colored spices.

Suryani Fine Arts: Buddha lovely expression

by Marthamaire

If you are in Mysore and you want to buy a beautiful, hand craved, wooden statue of Buddha, then I highly recommend Suryani Fine Arts. I took my time and went to many shops before I found this one. The expressions the artists have captured are lovely and the price is very reasonable. They will accept both credit cards and currency.

general advice: a price guide

by MichaelFalk1969

Just my subjective experience, prices can differ from region to region. It is just to get a feel for realistic prices in South India. The list will be updated on a regular basis: - bottle of water - 15 Rs. - softdrink (0,5 ltr.) - 22 - 25 Rs. - bottle of beer - 90 - 180 Rs. - mars bar - 60 Rs.- newspaper: 3-5 Rs.- laundry service: 10-20 Rs. per item - ayurvedic massage: 300 - 600 Rs. per hour- meal incl. starter & drink in an average restaurant - 250 - 500 Rs. - 1 night double room in budget hotel: 500 - 1500 Rs.- 1 night double room in midrange hotel: 1500 - 3000 Rs. - 1 night double room in good hotel: 3000 - 5000 Rs. - inner-city riksha ride up to 10 -15 minutes: minimum charge 15 Rs., mostly 30-50 Rs. - taxi ride (one hour driving time): ca. 400 - 600 Rs.- taxi ride (three hours driving time): ca. 1500 - 2000 Rs.

Shop with the locals

by Marthamaire

I have been to India twice and bought native dress on both occasions. The first time was a big mistake. The guide took us to a shop where measurements were taken, we selected the fabric, and we were told our outfit would be delivered the next day at our hotel after 5pm. None of the clothes came as promised. Instead, as we were boarding the bus the following morning, of the following day, a man from the shop drove up and handed out sealed packages to those of us who had ordered. When I got to my hotel room in the next town, I found the pants to the outfit did not fit properly and a cheaper material had been substituted. The following year, I was a smarter traveler. On a day when we had a free afternoon, I left the hotel and started walking. I watched Indian women walk by with their purchases and I backtracked, based on the logo on the shopping bags. I ended up in a dress shop patronized...

an overview: souvenir shopping in South India

by MichaelFalk1969

Mahabalipuram is very good if you want to take some stone sculptures home (small enough to fit into your hand luggage). Mysore is the best place to go shopping for souvenirs made from wood, like small decorative chests for jewelry; also a good places to buy scented oils. Kanchipuram and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu are good places to look for silk products. In Cochi, you can find virtually everything (especially in Mattancherry), at slightly higher prices. Bangalore is good if you want to do some "western-style" shopping as malls are abundant. Especially if you want to buy jeans at ridiculously low prices this is the best place to go.

Jew Town: Kochi: Spices, antiques, etc

by PierreZA

Jew Town in Kochi (Cochin) is a very nice area for shopping. There is not too much pressure from salesmen, which makes the experience quite enjoyable. There are many antique shops, some selling very good quality items. Besides all the antique shops, there is a good book shop, called Idiom bookshop, and quite a few spice shops. You will also be able to buy handicrafts from the whole region. xyz: Bargaining tricks

by Rupanworld

Bargaining is the rule in India. If you go for buying anything whatsoever, you better bargain the best price. Unless you are buying from an expensive showroom that has the 'FIXED PRICE' board hanging, tell yourself that you need to bargain. Here are some tips on how to. If you are at a roadside temporary stall, start from 1/3 the price they quote and agree upto not higher than 1/2 the price. However the pricing varies from place to place and depending upon the place, you might still stand to lose or gain. The rule is valid for purchase of all kinds pf souvenirs. 1/3 to 1/2 the quoted price
