My Bazaar Treasures

by lynnehamman

There are many choices of where and what to buy in India. My personal choice is to buy from small bazaars, which are everywhere in India. In all the big cities, there are shopping malls, book-shops, music shops and Beauty-Shops.But somehow, for me, the experience of wandering through a bazaar, seeing all the beautiful crafts , jewellery and having a friendly "negotiation"for a good bargain is fun. Having previously seen a lot of the items for sale in the cities, I was amazed at how much cheaper they could be purchased for in the bazaars of Udaipur,Jaisalmer,Jodhpur and Chandi Chowk, in Old Delhi. Fabrics- the most exquisite silk from Varanasi and JaipurShoes (Jooties) from Jodhpur & JaisalmerBed-Covers & Textiles from Gujerat and RajasthanBooks - from the many bookstalls in College Street, KolkataPerfumed Natural Oils from Chandi Chowk, Old DelhiSilver Inlaid Jewellery - bazaars in...

Most smaller shops: Bargain, haggle and save!

by musicollector

Always try to negotiate a lower price while purchasing almost anything. Chances are that the price can be lowered. It is part of the culture, so no need to be embarrassed! If you're unsuccessful, at least, you will not be left wondering if you could have had it for a lower price. Clothes, jewelry, shoes, and toiletries such as certain types of herbal soap and toothpaste unavailable in the West. Services are even cheaper. Far less than you would in Western countries.

Phiroze M Dastoor & CO: Get your eyes tested & new glasses whist in India

by into-thin-air

Maybe not the Normal sort of shopping tip, but before I set off for India I was told that it was an excellent place to get your eyes tested and to buy new glasses, So I did a bit of research on the internet and discovered that you could save about 75% on UK prices, a major saving !!I didn’t have time to follow this up when I was in Delhi, so when I reached Mumbai I set some time aside, Not that it took too much time, I checked out a couple of opticians and settled on Phiroze M Dastoor & CO, The branch that I used was on M.G. road, about half way between CST and The Flora Fountain on the left side.Friendly efficient service, Comprehensive eye test and three pairs of glasses (Two in Very Good Korean made spring-back designer frames and one in cheaper frames) 2 pairs for distance and one pair for reading. They also offer vary-focal & bi-focal glasses, Contact Lenses and laser correction, all...

Open Hand shop: While in Varanasi, don't miss

by josephescu

First floor in a villa downtown Varanasi transformed in a shop selling various fabrics, curtains, pillows, even small wooden and paper items. There is an Open Hand shop in the old part of New Delhi, but it is much msaller than the one in Varanasi. There are at least 4 good reasons to go there:-nice terrace, where you can stretch legs while having a good pot of tea-large variety of items on sale, brought form various parts of India, thus different than what you can see in the streets-all items have labelled prices, which is something of unique and makes the shopping more care free-shipping items back home – staff was kind enough to ship home for me not only the items I brought from them, but also the shopping I carried from Nepal. The parcel arrived by sea one month later.
