Shopping in Jaipur, Rajasthan

by Hmmmm

Jaipur is a shopper's paradise. This is one of the few places where the shoppers may actually watch the skilled artisans producing the articles they want to buy.The main markets are along Jauhari Bazaar, Badi Chaupar and M.I. Road. Shops specializing in precious and semi-precious stones are to be found on and along Jauhari Bazaar, but in order to see the celebrated minakars, kunda workers, gem-cutters and ornament makers at work, it is necessary to visit their workshops at Jadiyon-ka-Rasta, Gopalji-ka-Rasta, Haldiyon-ka-rasta and the adjoining lanes. For bandhej (tie and dye), and block printed textiles, the best shops are along Jauhari Bazaar and Badi Chaupar. The larger establishments are at Sanganer where dozens of workshops produce the famous block printed textiles. The narrow Khajanewalon-ka-Rasta off Chandpole Bazaar is the main center of stone carving. Shops dealing in marble...

DON'T BUY THEM - They are blood products: Shahtoosh Shawls and Stuff.

by Hmmmm

‘Shahtoosh’ is the name given to wool derived from the chiru. The fabric woven from this wool carries the same name and is worn by the fashionable worldwide. The chiru's natural habitat is Tibet - with populations ranging into Ladakh. Nature has provided it with a two-layered fur, to give it the warmth that it requires for survival. The visible coat is the second coat and is coarse. The short, fine haired under layer hugs the chiru’s skin. Shahtoosh is derived from the undercoat. International trade in shahtoosh has been prohibited under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1979. Domestic trade is also banned within many countries, including China and India. The notable exception is the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is where chiru wool is woven into shahtoosh shawls and scarves. It has been documented trade routes...

ok, you can get guitar strings in delhi and you can get guitars and the basics that go with them, but if you are a drummer well then hahahahahahahahaha oh dear i can't stop laughing hahahahahahahahahaha bad luck hahahahahahahahahahaha if you don't laugh you'll cry hahahahahahahahahaha.seriously you can get some cheap sticks but haggle like hell for the cheapest price because they don't appear to have much life in them! good luck guys and girls! tradition indian instruments! not much going for guitars and drums, so take as many strings/sticks/skins as you can. i'm not joking, myself and our guitarist searched high and low! haggle like you are possessed by the devil!

Markets and supermarkets: Saffron, is it or isn't it?

by sissah

When you walk through markets, you're sure to be approached about buying saffron. And many tourists here do wish to purchase it because it's about 20 times more expensive at home. The problem with buying it in the markets is, it's probably not saffron. There is a fake there, and you'll be able to know it by the cost and the quantity of which it's packaged. The best way to avoid getting ripped off and going home with a fake spice is to go to a local supermarket. Many times, saffron won't be in the spice aisle of the supermarket (but buy your other spices here, because, God knows, I left with two bags bursting at the seems, for 40 U.S. dollars -- so good). It's more likely to be behind a counter due to the fact that it is so expensive; stores can't afford to leave such a small, pricey package in the aisle. It comes out to almost doller per half gram. I was paying 30 rupees per half...

Again, anytown India: Gents - Let me introduce THE KURTA!

by lachydragon

Now, as for Men's clothing shopping it is pretty easy in the sizing department... why? Because the universal men's traditional garment is the practical and versatile Kurta-Pyjama (no, its not nightwear...we stole the word from Hindi I think). Basically it is a pair of baggy cotton pants held up by a drawcord that pull the waist in from being 4 times as wide as you hips to sitting comfortably on them and a long tunic top which should come down to about shin-length.It was a bit harder to find Kurta shops in India than Sari and Salwar shops but witha bit of a search you will find them. Kurtas come in varying degrees of quality and utility. I bought 3! One is a rough cotton one that is fairly day-to-day and cost me only Rs. 150 (about $5 Australian), I called it my 'bum-kurta' thinking it may look pretty 'bummy' but it actually wore really well. At the other extreme I spent a while looking...

Anytown India!!: Saris, salwars and sales-pitches!

by lachydragon

I can make a statement on this topis because my travelling companiion went on many shopping trips to the bazaars while we were travelling to buy Indian Clothes. She bought about 3 salwar kameez (which are the baggy pants and tunic) and a sari (the qunitnessentially Indian garmet of shimmery cloth that is worn with a bodice top and then the fabric, many metres in length is wrapped and tucked so very beautiful effect...see I am a quasi-expert!)The general gist of salwar shopping is that you will have to make a choice of either ready-made or fitted. If you are looking at ready-mades you will sit in the front of the shop and point to colours in the stacks at the back and the obliging shopkeeper will display them for you and then you can haggle for the prices. You can then walk out the door with your purchase (after extensive good-natured bargaining). Ready-mades you will choose the fabric...

various: wood

Sandalwood carvings from Karnataka, rosewood from Kerala and Madras, Indian walnut from Kashmir. These are often exquisite and make excellent presents. Make sure you know what woods you can take back home! Bargain for a good price.

various: Local Crafts

by TomorrowsAngel

Each region has it's own specialities - fine bronzes, brasswork (often inlaid with silver), canework and pottery. Papiermache is a characteristic Kashmir product, sometimes decorated with gold leaf. Marble and alabaster inlay work, such as chess sets and ornamental plates, are a specialty of Agra. Good leatherwork buys includes open India sandals and slippers (jooti). Bargain for a good price.

various: Jewellery

by TomorrowsAngel

Gold, silver and gemstones are plentful and reasonably cheap in Indian. Indian silverwork is world-famous. Rajasthani (Kundan) jewellery is traditionally heavy and stunningly elaborate. Jaipur is a good place to buy gemstones, then get them set separately (or take them back home like me!) I bought diamonds, rubies, sapphires and topaz. You get also get emeralds, lapis lazuli, moonstones, aquamarine, pearls and heaps more. Gold and silver prices are pretty similiar worldwide. After the Middle East, I would rate India as next cheapest for gold and silver jewellery (you can pay quite a big percentage as a 'maker's fee').Jaipur gemstones are cheap as chips - but check for authenticity!

Tip Photo
various: Clothes

by TomorrowsAngel

Clothes are very cheap to buy, and can be tailor made in some shops, usually very quickly. Choose from silks, cottons, himroos, brocades, chiffons, chignons, touched with streaks of silver and gold thread, set with sequins or semi-precious gems. Bargain for a good price
