Buying textiles

by sassy85

India is well known for hand made textiles. The handmade "Zaris" are magnificent pieces of art...and a great souvenir as well! There are also embroidered materials found, like pillow cases for example. They are found in various designs and colors.

Colaba Causeway: Shopping fun in Mumbai

by piglet44

Colaba Causeway is a long street in Mumbai where you can buy everything. If you are looking for last minute gifts or souvenirs before you leave this is the place. Just walk along this street and you will find small stalls, regular stores and department stores selling all the things you forgot to buy your friends while touring. So don't carry all the gifts around with you- buy them just before you fly home. You can buy incense in Mysore but it is the same price in Mumbai, small miniature pictures on fine paper , little buddha and Ganesh statues and much more. a few dollars only.

no prices are fixed

by arv1

there are numerous stores/stalls where you cany buy indian clothes from. prices are never fixed but the merchandise is always good. the shop assistants are nice if not over friendly but u always receive the attention you need. politeness is a guarentee as they rely on ur custom when in india, a sari or any asian clothing is really cheap and is always in the latest fashion. so this is a must to buy. prices are never fixed. the shopkeepers are able to see you are foreign regardless of colour and will immediately hike up the price. therefore you must haggle the price down but nothing too insulting. you shouldnt expect to pay more than £100 (british pounds) for an item no matter how embriodered it is, if they expect u 2 walk out. also, dont show you interest till your really keen, otherwise they keep pulling more out

Street Tailors: Dress in Style

by Vintom

Why not treat yourself to some handmade clothing while in India. For a very modest price street tailors will make you anything you like. I have had a few shirts made by these men anf they were just great, not only do you get a handmade shirt, but also a great momento of your trip.Expect to pay around 1 or 2 pounds for a basic Indian style cotton (No Collar) shirt. Tailors as I said will make you anything you like, and usually within a couple of hours. You simply choose the material and a design, then leave it up to these wizzards to work their magic with the aid of their old sewing machine. A lot less than you would at home!

Fashion Street, Mumbai (Bombay)

by tobhamor

Stretching along the road down from the Flora Fountain is a collection of stalls selling clothing that didn't make the grade for export. There will be small faults on most garments, but it's a cheap place to shop if you have good bargaining skills. In fact, if you need to practice your bargaining skills, go here with no intention of buying something and see how you get on - by genuinely not wanting to buy you will be able to wangle a better price - but watch out - if the price is good enough, you may end up buying anyway!

Bangles!

by Maline

Not a thing to list under jewellry, perhaps. Because the bangles are usually made of plastic.Anyway, especially in the shopping district near the Vishvanathi area in Varanasi, the bangle shops were abundant. Bangles cost perhaps 1-2 euros for ten pieces and the come in EVERY look. Pastel, bright, golden, silvery, adorned, simple, metal, plastic even glass ones (ooops there is something not to pack in a rucksack you are using for train pillow!!), every taste has a bangle, provided you like bangles in the first place of course.I say I got about 40 pcs to bring home, the bright turquiose ones look great with a tan, but they make an annoying rattle when you move. Try them on first, many are very small in size. If you want to bring something home for children, this may be a cute not too expensive gift for little princesses. Bangles, bangles, bangles 1-3 euros per ten pcs, unless you go for...

Sandals

by Maline

Get a pair of leather sandals. I did, and they were so comfortable. I got them in a real shoe store though, and not in a tourist store, possibly the touristic sandals were less comfy, but I might be wrong. They looked cooler though. Anyway, with all the foot jewelry for sale, and if you get a mendhi or something, sandals are great for showing off your feet! From 2$US and up...

Jewelry

by Maline

One thing to really go for in India is jewelry. Especially foot jewelry! Beautiful toe rings or anklets are for sale everywhere, also headlocks can be fun (the little adornment on your forehead, just belov the hair line), and don't forget the bindis ("stickers" for your forehead, the most common in red felt). You can also get nice bindis for your belly button. These things are not expensive, easy to pack and make exotic gifts for friends at home! Look around a bit. The prizes vary considerably. Get your items in specialized stores rather than stores aimed at tourists. Bindis can be found in perfumeries for example.

Carpet shop warning!

by PCuk

BEWARE! whilst on a tour or if on day out with a hired car you will be taken to the obligatory "carpet shop" (the guide will be getting a cut for taking you there). It is however an essential part of being in India..but after about the 3rd or 4th stop you begin to tire of the same "carpet-patter"!!.This will consist of a greeting of "we are not going to sell you anything!!" to a display of how the carpet is made to the extravagent display of carpets on offer. The carpets however are generally of excellent quality, usually made in Kashmir (of which you'll be told of the troubles and how they have to come to Delhi to sell)and far better than you will buy at home. However come with your credit card..the carpets can be expensive and a great deal of bartering will have to be done..and even when you have purchased,be prepared for them to want to sell you more..if not carpets,pashmenas,trinkets...
