Like my New Zealand, India is a cricketing nation. I would even go as far as to say they are even more full on about it than us Kiwis. Street cricket games are omnipresent, if I can use that word.

And joining one is easy. I always just go up and say Hi! And within minutes you have a bat in your hand or a ball. If you can spin the ball, bowl a googly or send down a steamer, you have reams of kids lining up to face you.

If you can drive a steamer, the kids will be fighting to bowl you out. From seeing kids playing in India i see why guys like Tendulkar can drive the ball well - they grow up playing in narrow streets. They don't have the luxury of cuting and pulling shots like Kiwi Kids and Aussie Kids.

For street Cricket - nothing.. Just a grin and a friendly disposition.

To play in a cricket club you will need the whole shabang; Bat, Pads, Gloves, Helmet, Whites maybe even a ball.

Most of the usual sport activitues are available in India. There are beaches (Goa is most popular) but most coastal areas have good beaches.
Golf is possible, in Delhi, Kolkata & Mumbai.
White-water rafting is popular in the north of the country.
And by far the most enjoyable- walking and hiking trails. The area around Rishikesh is really pretty. The banks of the Ganges have beachy areas-lovely just to stroll along, and watch the river flowing by. More serious & strenuous hikes can be done, but make sure that your fitness level matches the trail that you choose to take.
Horse-riding is good in Rajasthan- as is camel riding.
The picture is of Sanjeev. Friend, Eco-warrior- professional photographer- father of adopted baby elephant Yogi- Wild Life Preservationist-Adventure Guide-Film-maker.
Whew! he is so many things! But most of all- he is a great friend and lovely person. He cares about the world- Contact him at Mohans adventures-he is probably one of the very best hiking and adventure guides in India.

What else but CRICKET . Try to learn this so-called gentleman's game when you're in India, or at least soak up a whole nation's highly infectious passion for the sport. During important matches, say when India plays Pakistan, where national pride is at stake, the atmosphere easily dwarfs that of any World Cup football matches.

As for me, my knowledge of the game has never gone beyond batter-saves-the-wickets-from-the-wicked-pitcher thing. But I certainly did enjoy the fiesta atmosphere of an India-Pakistan match, which at one occasion turned out to be as mournful as a funeral when India lost to Pakistan (but some Indian Muslims were rejoicing!).

Very important tip: Never schedule any important business meeting when an India-Pakistan match is underway as people, including serious executives, would be glued to their TVs. It is close to sacrilege.

Instead, go to a restaurant and watch the match with the locals. Shopping would not be a good idea either as some shops do close for these matches!

Another point of confluence is Karna Prayag, merely 11 km away from the famed Pindari Glacier. Here the rivers Pindari and Alaknanda become one. This township serves as a base point for trekkers moving on to the high altitudes, including the glacier itself. Twenty two km away from Karna Prayag is Nanda Prayag – it offers yet another visual treat in the journey of the Himalayan rivers. Here the Alaknanda meets the Nandakini, that flows from a glacier along the Nanda Devi peak. This is another popular point with trekkers. There is also Vishnu Ganga, 12 km away from the town of Joshimath. Here the rivers Vishnu Ganga (known after this point as Alaknanda) and Dhauli Ganga meet. One of the fiver prayags of the region, Vishnu Prayag is about 12 km from Joshimath.

The char (four) dhams (starting points) - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri. Traditionally, the yatra (journey) is carried out from west to east – starting with Yamunotri, it proceeds to Gangotri, then to Kedarnath and Badrinath. En route to the dhams are the awesome confluence points of the rivers – some of them easily among the most majestic in the world. One of the prettiest confluence points is at Dev Prayag, 70 km from Rishikesh. Here the river Bhagirathi, which emerges from Gaumukh, unites with the Alaknanda from Satopanth. It is at this point that Ganga begins to flow. Ahead of Dev Prayag lies Rudra Prayag, a small hilly town that has come up at the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. It is at Rudra Prayag that roads branch off in two directions – one leads to Kedarnath (84 km away), the other to Badrinath (159 km away).

Good Trekking Shoes, Back-Support Backpack, appropriate clothing for the season.

    Try gully cricket once

Cricket is like a religion in India. Players are worshipped and its not rare to find garlands on television sets when a match is going on. People would prefer to meet up all at a place and watch a match instead of watching alone at home. During my association with people from countries that do not play cricket, they have always wondered at how people can watch a game for a whole day. It's difficult to answer, but we do remain glued to the TV when an important match is on, so what we lose the whole day. At work, people can't concentrate and keep on calling home and inquiring about the scores every 30 minutes or simply subscribing to cricket on sms. We Indians also do find it strange at times, especially when we lose, but still there is no coming out from this passion. It has been, it is and it will always be worshipped in India. "Gully" means a lane and a 'gully cricket' would imply the boys from the lanes (all ages, starting from the 5 year olds to the 40 year olds) gathering in their lanes, and playing cricket there, not minding the little traffic that passes by. This is more common during transport strikes, when the little lanes get converted into stadiums.
Its great fun and I would suggest all tourists from both cricket playing and non-playing countries to try playing gully cricket once with the local boys. You will remember the fun.
