Beaches along the west coast

by SirRichard

You can find a few nice beaches along the west coast, but probably Goa has the best ones. February is still high season so you might find them a bit crowded. But you might go to the SOUTH beaches, which usually are less crowded. PALOLEM is a grat option, southernmost. When I was there like 10 years ago there were only huts at the beach. I was intending to just see it and leave but I stayed there a week!! It was gorgeous, even in rainy season. By photos I have seen I guess now you'd find a few bungalows but still much less crowded than the north. If tou continue to Kerala, sailing in boat houses along the BACKWATERS is a real must! A bit more southern, near Kollam (where you'll end the backwaters cruise) there is the great beach of VARKALA. There is a beach with some pilgrim places and temples and some cliffs with terraces, hotels...

Tennis tales...

by husain

While India has done quite well in Davis cup competitions, reaching the finals on three occassions, there has been a dearth of individual performances of late. The Krishnans, the Amritraj's have had their share of success in the past. Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi formed a formidable duo on the doubles circuit, reaching the number one rank. There have been success stories off and on for the mens game... Its the womens tennis scene in India however, that had been devoid of any promising talent to talk about... Until, Sania Mirza, first reached the 3rd round at the Australian open, won the Hyderabad WTA title, and then went on to beat the US open champion- Svetlana Kuznetsova, at Dubai, in straight sets, and later in the year, reachining the 4th round of the US open and notching up a career high Wta ranking of 31 last year. She bagged the `WTA ?Newcomer of the Year? Award for the year...

Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company

by MalenaN

I thought it was best to book a trek before coming to Leh. I was not sure how easy it would be to walk around in Leh on arrival to find a trek leaving, and coming back, within the time I was planning to be there. While searching on Internet I came across Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company. It is an agency owned by a women and they only have women guides. I liked the fact that they have small groups and stay in homestays along the Markha Valley trek (and other treks where those are available). Many tour companies in Leh do camping treks and use ponies to carry the luggage. To stay in a homestay is more ecofriendly, it gives the villagers an income and you see more of the Ladakhi culture.I sent an email to Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company and they told me there was one person doing the Markha Valley trek at the same time I wanted to do it. They emailed her and asked her if it was okay that I...

For sporty travellers in India

by lynnehamman

Most of the usual sport activitues are available in India. There are beaches (Goa is most popular) but most coastal areas have good beaches. Golf is possible, in Delhi, Kolkata & Mumbai.White-water rafting is popular in the north of the country. And by far the most enjoyable- walking and hiking trails. The area around Rishikesh is really pretty. The banks of the Ganges have beachy areas-lovely just to stroll along, and watch the river flowing by. More serious & strenuous hikes can be done, but make sure that your fitness level matches the trail that you choose to take.Horse-riding is good in Rajasthan- as is camel riding. The picture is of Sanjeev. Friend, Eco-warrior- professional photographer- father of adopted baby elephant Yogi- Wild Life Preservationist-Adventure Guide-Film-maker.Whew! he is so many things! But most of all- he is a great friend and lovely person. He cares about the...

Try gully cricket once

by Rupanworld

Cricket is like a religion in India. Players are worshipped and its not rare to find garlands on television sets when a match is going on. People would prefer to meet up all at a place and watch a match instead of watching alone at home. During my association with people from countries that do not play cricket, they have always wondered at how people can watch a game for a whole day. It's difficult to answer, but we do remain glued to the TV when an important match is on, so what we lose the whole day. At work, people can't concentrate and keep on calling home and inquiring about the scores every 30 minutes or simply subscribing to cricket on sms. We Indians also do find it strange at times, especially when we lose, but still there is no coming out from this passion. It has been, it is and it will always be worshipped in India. "Gully" means a lane and a 'gully cricket' would imply the...

A nation's passion

by Tijavi

What else but CRICKET . Try to learn this so-called gentleman's game when you're in India, or at least soak up a whole nation's highly infectious passion for the sport. During important matches, say when India plays Pakistan, where national pride is at stake, the atmosphere easily dwarfs that of any World Cup football matches. As for me, my knowledge of the game has never gone beyond batter-saves-the-wickets-from-the-wicked-pitcher thing. But I certainly did enjoy the fiesta atmosphere of an India-Pakistan match, which at one occasion turned out to be as mournful as a funeral when India lost to Pakistan (but some Indian Muslims were rejoicing!). Very important tip: Never schedule any important business meeting when an India-Pakistan match is underway as people, including serious executives, would be glued to their TVs. It is close to sacrilege. Instead, go to a restaurant and watch the...

Formula 1: Catching up with the world...

by husain

One of the fastest growing sports on Indian televison. Formula 1 has become something that most of urban India has become familiar with this season. Thanks to Narain Karthikeyan, the first Indian ever to be racing in F1. Karthikeyan had a mixed season last year, with team Jordan. But the fact that an Indian has made it to this extremely exclusive club, where budgets touch dizzy limits, has meant that he's always in the news. For 2006, he is with the Williams f1 team as a test driver.Backed by a fair number of big Indian corporates for sponsors, Karthikeyans success has opened the gates for other Indians to aim higher with their motorsport careers. Already there are a fair number of promising youngsters coming thru the ranks - racing in Europe and in Asia. There has been talk of a F1 circuit being built in India, however the plans havent taken any concrete shape yet.
