All night bazaar: Shopping after closing hours!

by vpas Written Jan 5, 2013

There are a whole set of shops at the All night bazaar which is adjacent to the Shilparamam village complex. The prices in these shops are slightly higher than the Shops in Shilparamam, but for people who due to work constraints cannot shop during the usual hours can make use of these shops which sell ethnic and contemporary locally made stuff all through the night.

At Satya Sai Nigamagamam Hall: Silk and cotton expo

by vpas Written Jan 5, 2013

Very often this hall is let out to exhibitors and the range is truly wide and prices are reasonable. This is not a permanent shopping mall, but is a function hall which is very often rented out to exhibitions. So almost every month there are sales held here. It is a convenient place to shop for silk and cotton saris, dresses, fabrics, imitation jewellery etc.

What to pay: about average. You may bargain but the prices are more or less fixed and so not much reduction would be made. but do try!!

Shop at this ethnic "village": Shilparamam

by vpas Written Jan 5, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Shilparamam is a gated area where a village like atmosphere is created. There are shops from all over India, selling ethnic as well as contemporary items. There is so much to buy -- clothes, footwear, jewellery, handicrafts, pottery, ceramics... you name it and you will find it.
There are also food stalls selling ethnic food items. It is a great experience to come and shop here.
You also have women applying henna for a nominal price.

What to buy: Clothes, footwear, bags, jewellery, ceramics ... so much more

What to pay: You need to bargain but not much, if you go to a few shops you will get a general idea about the prices. There are more or less standard prices, but do check in a few shops and then buy. Bargain a bit.

Hyderabadi Specialities: Lac Bangles & Pearls

    by Donna_in_India Updated Sep 18, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Lacquer Bangles and Pearls are specialities of Hyderabad. You will find hundreds of types and colors of bangles (including lac bangles that are studded with glittering stone pieces) in the 400-year-old market, Laad Bazaar, located in the lanes around Charminar. Prices will vary so make sure to shop around. Try to bargain at the little shops but always bargain if you buy from stalls/carts on the street.

Hyderabad is also one of the largest pearl trading hubs in the world. Tonnes of them arrive in Hyderabad to go through the various stages of maufacture; drilling, sorting, sizing, designing, threading are all done here. You can find all kinds of pearls here (there are a million pearl shops!) that range in price from a few hundred rupees to lacs of rupees. If you can tell the real from the fake, bargain hard at the stalls at Laad Bazaar. If you can't, then make sure to go somewhere reputable!

    Happy Shopping!

Deccan Achar: Best for Spicy Pickles!

    by Donna_in_India Updated Sep 18, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you want to relish your meals with hot pickles (pachadi), this is the place to buy them. Every vegetable (as well as some fruits) can be converted into a pickle. Favorites include the avakkaya - a mango pickle and gongura chutney made from the gongura leaf. There are also not so common types such as tomato and even unusual ones such as fish, prawn, or chicken!

Deccan Achar has dozens of fresh selections that start at Rs 80 per kg. If you are travelling, they will hot seal the pickles in a plastic bag and put that into a plastic container. Every time my husband sampled a different pickle, he bought another kg! A great treat or gift.

(Just a note: pickles cannot go in your carry-on luggage. You must check them.)

What to pay: Prices start at Rs 80 per kg
