Charminar-Northern view by alycat Reminiscent of the glorious times gone by is the Charminar, a monument built in 1591 and still symbolic of the city. Next to the Charminar is one of the largest mosques in the world, the Mecca Masjid. This almost four centuries old mosque can accommodate up to 11,000 worshippers. The Golconda Fort, though now in ruins, was once a strong and massive fortress built at the site of the famous diamond mines of Golconda. Its amazing acoustic system allows the sound of a handclap to be heard right at its top. Ingenious indeed was its system of water supply andmethods to cool the palace and the roof gardens. The Salar Jung museum contains exhibits drawn from far and near. These are some of the things that u will find in most of guide books about hyderabad. There are so many new places n tourist attractions that have come up over the years, all complementing the history of this great city. Leave a Comment

Golconda Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must see in Hyderabad. It was originally founded in the 13th century by the Kakatiyas but expanded by the Qutb Shahi kings. It is a massive granite fort built on a 400 foot hill with a circumference of 7 km. I highly recommend getting a licensed guide at the entrance (about Rs 500) and making the climb to the highest point, Bala Hissar. (Our guide was extremely informative.) It is not a steep climb and took us less than 30 minutes with short photo stops along the way. Along the way there are a few lookout areas (overlooking the entire city), a Mosque, and a Hindu Temple, Mankal. There is also a prison which still has the religious paintings in a cell done by one of the prisoners. The fortress city within the walls was famous for the diamond trade. It is said that the Kohinoor diamond, the Hope diamond, and the Orloff diamond of Catherine the Great all came from here. Each night at 7 p.m. there is a sound (in English) and light show. Of course, there is a story of romance that goes with the Fort, but you'll have to go to the show to hear about it. We actually went to the fort twice because there was little light when we first went so we just went to the sound and light show. We went back the next day to make the climb in the daylight. They are in the process of making a museum (which probably won't be done for a couple of years). Got to peek into the building and saw some great photos of the fort. Should be nice when it's done. Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy the view! Open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission Rs 10 for Indians, Rs 150 for foreigners Sound & Light Show 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. Rs 50 for all Visitor information was correct at time of writing. Built over 200 years ago the palace complex has been restored after 5 years of work. It is a combination of many architectural styles and influences. I really did like some of the arches, doorways, etc. It was the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. One of the nicest rooms open to the public is the King's throne room where official guests and royal visitors were entertained. The chandeliers were fantastic. Interestingly, the complex is a replica of the Shah’s Palace in Teheran, Iran. It consists of two courtyards with elegant palaces, the grand Khilwat (Durbar Hall), fountains and gardens (with some beautiful flowers). Not many rooms were open to the public and most that were really weren't all that interesting. I did like the various carriages used for transporting people from one part of the complex to another. (Previously the grounds occupied about 3-4 dozen acres. Today it's only about 1 dozen.) The grounds are used for various functions and while we were there they were being set up for a wedding. This wouldn't be on my must-sees of Hyderabad only because I have seen many other more beautiful palaces in India. If pressed for time, I would skip it. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Fridays and National Holidays Admission Rs 25 for Indians, Rs 150 for foreigners Rs 50 for Camera Leave a Comment

Located in the middle of the Old City, Charminar is a major landmark of Hyderabad. It was built by Mohammed Quli Wutub Shah in 1591 at the center of the city's original layout to commemorate the end of the plague. Charminar is named after its 4 minarets, each of which rises to a height of almost 50m and is surrounded by 4 kamaans (grand arches) that open out onto 4 major roads of the city. There is a small mosque located on the roof. Climb the stairs to the top for a great view of the area around - particularly Laad Bazaar with its jewelry shops selling pearls and bangles. The area around is very hectic with rickshaws, pedestrians, hawkers, stalls, stores, etc. Open 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission Rs 5 for Indians, Rs 100 for foreigners. Try not to go mid day for best photos. Leave a Comment Directions: Located in the Old City, ask anyone.

Golkonda Fort This fort was built by Kakatiya kings. From this fort they ruled the nearby areas even when their capital was based in Warrangal. This massive fort is 11 km in perimeter and its walls are 15 to 18 ft high. The whole fort is built in granite and is flanked by 70 ramparts and 8 huge gates. Previously the whole fort was surrounded by a deep gorge but slowly this was filled up. While entering from the main gate of the fort, if one claps below the dome, echoes are heard in a Darbar hall some 128 meter away. Leave a Comment

by srhussaini These are the places must to be seen in Hyderabad :-Charminar / Golkonda Fort / Salarjung Museum Ramoji Film City / Tank Bund / Lumbini Park NTR Ghat / Indira Park / Sanjeevaiah Park Hitech City / Shilparamam / Gandipet / Tombs Mecca Masjid / Birla Mandir /Birla Planetorium & etc. CHARMINAR :- The Charminar is as much the signature of Hyderabad as the Taj Mahal is of Agra or the Eiffel Tower is of Paris. Often called 'The Arc de triumph of the East', Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, built Charminar in 1591 at the centre of the original city layout. Legends has it that it was built as charm to ward off a deadly epidemic raging at that time. Four graceful minarets soar to a height of 48.7 m above the ground. Charminar has 45 prayer spaces and a mosque in it. The Charminar is a square edifice with four grand arches each facing a cardinal point that opened once upon a time into four royal streets. At each corner stands an exquisitely shaped minaret, more than 55 mt. in height with a double balcony. A bulbous dome crowns each minaret with dainty petal like designs at the base. A beautiful mosque is located at the western end of the open roof and the remaining part of the roof served as a court during the Qutub Shahi times. Built with granite and lime-mortar, the Charminar is a fine example of the Cazia style of architecture. The intertwined arches and domes are typical of the Islamic architecture. The graceful floral motif atop the Charminar is enchanting. The Charminar depicts the Indo-Saracenic tradition - a symbiosis of the Hindu and the Muslim traditions, which has woven the magic of a rich Deccani culture. The nightly illumination of Charminar is spectacular. Leave a Comment Address: HYDERABADOther Contact: RAMOJI FILM CITY :- Ramoji Film

by Archie_Oak Laad Bazaar The legendary Laad Bazaar or the Street of Love emerges from the greatest arches of Hyderabad - the historic landmark - the Charminar. The famous bangle shops of Laad Bazaar flank this historical monument westwards. A shopper's paradise, the rows of glittering bangle shops invite you in. The accent here is on color, glitter and sheen. This is true of not only bangles but everything at Laad Bazaar. The Mehboob Chowk, a torpid looking quadrangle with an imposing tower in the middle marks the end of the Bazaar. Leave a Comment

by tarush Though originally founded by the Kakatiya in the 13th century, the fort was expanded in the period of the Qutub Shahi kings into a massive fort, known for its diamond trade. The kohinoor diamond, Orloff diamond and the Hope diamonds are believed to have been originated from here. The whole fort is built in granite and is flanked by 70 ramparts and 8 huge gates. Previously the whole fort was surrounded by a deep gorge but slowly this was filled up. The design of the ventilation reveals the brilliant planning of the architects. The ventilation is designed to let in a flow of fresh cool breeze, which is a respite from the heat of summer! One of the most remarkable features of Golconda, is its system of acoustics. The sounds of hands clapped in the grand portico can be heard in the Durbar Hall, at the very top of the hill. The tombs of the Qutub Shahi kings lie about one kilometer north of the outer wall of Golconda. These graceful structures are surrounded by landscaped gardens, with beautifully carved stonework. A new attraction at the fort is a Sound and Light that brings the legend of Golconda to life. With a spectacular interplay of audio and visual effects, the saga of Golconda unfolds over centuries of splendor. The show livens up the glorious past and it is an experience worth watching. The show is presented in English and Telugu on alternate days of the week. Leave a Comment
