One of the largest and the best zoos in Asia, the Nehru Zoological Park has nearly 1,500 species of animals, birds and reptiles. Situated in the Bahadurpura area on the way to the N.G. Ranga Agricultural University in Rajendranagar, the zoo is ahead of Afzalgunj, the Osmania General Hospital and the High Court of AP.
The popular ones among the different species are white peacocks, mynahs, chimpanzees and rhinoceros. The major attraction within the zoo, however, is the Lion Safari. A van barbed with wrought iron takes you through the gates of the safari - opening one gate at a time - into a completely different world of wild animals where lions, tigers, rhinos, wild oxen, panthers, etc. are left out freely into the wilderness of a simulated jungle.
Apart from the animals, a nocturnal zoo, the pre-historic dinosaur park, a natural history museum, parks, a mini-train and animal rides make the place ideal for a picnic. The nocturnal animals and the reptiles form a particularly interesting part of the whole.
A must visit for all provided you can walk around for 6-7 hours to cover the entire zoo which is on 300 acres of land.

The park is located at Vanasthalipuram, at a distance of 20 km from the city. The park was established in 1977.
The park is famous for the endangered Black Buck, the state animal of Andhra Pradesh.
The other species of animals commonly seen are Monitor Lizards, Mongooses, Porcupines and Hares besides a variety of Snakes.
The avian fauna of the park comprises over 100 species and includes Partridges, Quails, Peacocks, Doves and birds of prey like Kites, Vultures etc. A variety of migratory birds can also be seen round the year. Short-toed Eagle is another rare species nesting in this area.
This center offers audio-visual education on nature and wildlife and is supported by a good nature library. An exhibition hall displaying exhibits explaining intricate problems of wildlife conservation.
Tourist facilities
There are sheds for rest and observation towers for viewing the animals.
A van is provided to take the visitors inside the park to see the animals from close quarters.
From 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. daily except Mondays.
The safari rides are between 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Rates of admission into Vanasthali in departmental van or mini bus are Rs.5/- per adult and Rs.3.00 per child.

When we were in school the only picnic spot in Hyderabad was the Zoo, situated in the Bahadurpura area. The hyderabad zoo is the biggest zoological park in India with a Lion Safari Park, Natural History Museum and a children's train. It is located in Hyderabad city and is easily accessible. Various species of birds and animals can be seen here. It also has a nocturnal zoo that houses animals not normally seen during the day. Large recreational parks, gardens, a mini train and animal rides, make it an ideal picnic spot. The zoo has a large collection of animals, in environments similar to their natural habitat. It also houses the majestic white tiger.
Once when we had gone to the zoo from the school, I tried poking a leopard with my cricket bat and the animal gave a hard jab on my bat, which left a deep gash on my willow. It blew the daylights out of me!!!
