In Andhra Pradesh a Kolam or Treshold Design is called by the name of Muggulu.These are usually done in white rice powder since ancient times, but now moreand more frequently are done with crushed sand- or lime-stone powder. When they aremade with coloured powder the design is called a Rangoli, it is a colourful sight to see thispowder being sold in the towns and villages, pilled up high in heaps on a cart.Some of the designs remind me of Celtic art.Of old the women and girls would get up early in the morning and after cleaningthe treshold of their home with water, they would make these intricate designs.They are meant to be a blessing for the homestead.While I was in Tiruvannamalai lately I've seen some perforated rolling tubes for salewhich can be used to create a design.
