Patna Things to Do

Great view from the top of the Granary

I only have very sketchy of Patna, as it was the first large town that I got to in India after spending two whole days travelling from Nepal on some of the most backwards transportation systems known to man.

A brief morning in Patna took in the rather impressive Granary from the Bristish era. The walk to the top is well worth it for the view. The building was so well constructed that it is still in use, as it was designed.

I also visited the important Sikh Gurdwara in the old town, extremely friendly
and welcoming. Despite the offer to stay the night, I was perhaps too eager to start exporing apace.

Patna is thus not exactly on the main tourist circuit, meaning that it is easy to meet up with other western travellers (if you are one). I spent most of the morning in the compant of a couple of Swedes who seemed to have been everywhere (and were thus in Patna to 'tick it off') and an Irishman who seemed to conduct the totality of his communications with the outside world using just two words. 'Good' and 'Bread', at Lunchtime it was possible to hear him utter both words together.

    Inscription Slate on Golghar

A visit to Golghar (translated in English-Round house) is a must. It is located in the heart of the city, very close to Gandhi Maidan. This granary was built by this British Gentleman called John Garstin in the year 1786 for British Soldiers, to overcome the famine situation prevailing for some time around that time. Golghar has a spiral staicase winding all the way to the top, from where one can have an excellant view of the river Ganges (or Ganga in Hindi) flowing close by.
