We had no trouble at all booking our train journey to Ahmadabad from Mumbai. We did the booking at the reservation centre (Central Railways) near where the taxi's stand. They have a foreign tourist counter, which has a quota for visitors. The Gujerat Mail was our train, and we found that the 2nd AC sleeper that we were allocated was completely comfortable, clean and spacious. We shared with two business travellers, which did not bother us at all. It is only an overnight trip, and each bunk has a curtain for privacy. The trip took 8 hours. TOILETS were fine-there was even a hand shower. Carry a toilet Roll. Gujerat Mail(2901) leaves Mumbai Central at 9.50 and arrives in Ahmedabad at 6.15 am. The waiting room at Mumbai Central is very comfortable and clean Leave a Comment

Ahmadabad traffic is insane. We did find that using Autorickshaws was most convienent way to get around, but choose your driver carefully. Make sure that he speaks a bit of English, or understands at least. We were taken to places we had not specified, and always just a smile from driver when we asked where he was taking us. Fix a fare also, before leaving. I would say that this info applies to taxies as well. And hold onto your hat!!!!! The ride can get very scary. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The best way to travel to Ahmedabad from Bombay is by Shatabdi Express. It takes around 8 hours. Other option is by regular Indian Airlines, and Jet Airways. Autorickshaws are one option, but if U have time, can hire bicycles on day basis. Theme: Bicycle

3 wheeler rickshaws.a best transportation in city by dhaval972 For the trainee who is left without a vehicle, there is one alternative. Make friends with the army of Rickshaw drivers. Here are the 3 steps on how to become a frequent traveller… 1. When entering the “Auto” request the driver politely to zero the meter. 2. Tell the driver where to go or give directions by pointing or saying “left”, “straight” etc. 3. After reaching your destination check the price and pay! The second step might be the most difficult in the beginning. In case the driver does not speak English wait for some helpful person to show up and ask him/ her to translate. How to check the price: The minimum charge of a ride is Rs.7. As soon as the meter exceeds 2.5, you double the meter and round it up (e.g. 4.7 = Rs. 14). Incase of doubt use the list that is included in this kit. By paying around Rs. 15-20, for a short to medium ride is OK and the “ Rickshaw wallas” are friendlier when you don’t draw out the list. Buses: Buses in India are the cheapest way and a sure shot way of reaching your destination. All of the towns in India, have state run buses, both for travelling to parts of the city, and also for tourism related activities. One thing that everyone has to take care of is, that buses and bus stops are the place where one seems to meet odd characters, so always be on the lookout. Railway Stations: 1. Kalupur Railway Station (Old City) – It’s the main station. 2. Gandhigram Railway Station, Nr. Sakar I, off Ashram Rd. now about amts. it means ahmedabad muncipal transport corporation. this organisation runs city buses. aviod sitting in this buses, as they are over crowded. you can watch them passing by you. if u feel like taking a short trip in this city buses, choose afternoon time, as it's offpeak hour. when u sit in the bus don't leave your things unattended. keep your wallet & money at a safe place. Having had a lifelong interest in the great man, it was amazing to visit this Ashram & museum. It is set in a peaceful grove on the banks of the river, and has been so well preserved that if Gandhi himself had appeared, I would not have been surpised. We saw his room, with his spinning wheel, bed & sandals...where he ate & where he slept ( he stayed here mainly from 1939 onwards) And this is the place that he set out from on his famous Salt March. The grounds of the ashram are filled with trees & birds , and very peaceful. Leave a Comment

For anyone interested in architecture, as I am, there are some world famous buildings by Kahn and Le Corbusier in Ahmedabad. Louis Kahn- The Indian Institute of Management Building (1962-74) is a perfect blend of traditional Islamic architecture with modern pure geometric shapes. It faces on to a wide grass lined square. The large rounded window shapes are very effective, and draw the eye. Le Corbusier- The Millers Association Building (1956) has concrete framework on both sides,is 3 stories high and its geometric design incorporates good use of light and shadow. It blends well with traditional Indian architecture. Sanskar Kendra Museum(1957) This spiral-shaped structure stands on pillars surrounding a grassy courtyard. It has a ramp which lead upwards towards the second floor. The lines of the building are clean and crisp. Leave a Comment

11th Century Sun Temple was built by King Bhimdev, and designed so that the early morning sun would shine down on the image of Surya, the Sun God, during the equinoxes. Inside are erotic sculptures. The outside of the temple has intricate carvings. Set in front of the temple is a huge, sunken rectangular baoli, that contains about 100 shrines. A three day dance festival is held each January at this complex. Leave a Comment Directions: 100km northwest of Ahmedabad, the temple can be reached by bus (3hours)
