Breakfast at Mount View Restaurant in Manali was only by default. Chopsticks, my favorite spot next door, was open but not quite ready to serve food. Not wanting to wait for my morning tea we ventured over to Mount View.
Aside from being the only customers in the place, the atmosphere was nice. Large glass windows allow for the front tables to be soaked in sunlight. The front door is cracked enough to hear the early morning merchants sweeping the sidewalks in preparation of customers. The menu here is your basic fare of Indian, Tibetan and Continental foods. Muesli is the smart choice in this town as the locals know how to do it right. Of course no breakfast, or meal that matter, is complete in Manali without momos. Mount view doesn’t disappoint with their offering.
Upstairs is the Mount View Cafe which boasts an espresso bar and open air seating overlooking the Mall. In hindsight we should have taken our breakfast there, however the espresso menu is available in the main level restaurant. This place was a nice alternative that I would try again on my next stop in Manali.
Cost Rs 280: 2 teas, 2 lassi, 2 eggs, bowl of muesli and a plate of momos + tip.

No visit to Manali is complete before dropping by for a meal at Chopsticks. This busy, neat & clean joint is a favorite of the tourist crowd. It’s easy to find located right on the main drag, smack dab in the middle of the Mall.
Service here is quick and friendly. Doors open early around 8 A.M. but the breakfast starts rolling out closer to 9 A.M. Try the muesli here...they know how to serve up a mean bowl full to the brim with curd, dried and fresh fruit all topped with honey. No trouble finding a seat during the morning hours as the breakfast crowd saunters in throughout the morning.
Lunch and Dinner are excellent times to catch the bustle of tourists. If you want to meet new people this is the place. The extensive menu covers Indian, Tibetan, Chinese and Continental fare at reasonable prices. Also, you can find beer and other alcoholic drinks here. Of course I order the momos for nearly every meal including breakfast. The spinach cheese are quite good. After two visits to Manali (2006 & 2009) and many meals during those visits, nothing on the menu has disappointed me yet.
Though not as relaxed as Gakyi in Mcleodganj, you can certainly walk up and start a conversation with strangers. Most times the crowd is a mix of Indian tourists and foreigners from all over...listen in on a table nearby and you’re bound to hear about their day of sightseeing or where they are off to in the morning.
2009 meal cost: Rs 280, momos, two lassi, one dish and roti + tip.
Favorite Dish: Momos! Muesli!

We came here for a beer and to sit by the fire.
Set in the same building as Johnson's Lodge, it is constructed of stone and wood. There is a large open fireplace at one end with comfy chair's and a sofa around it. There is another wood fire in the middle of the room with more chairs. The food is a mixture of Indian and international. Soup 60 Rupees, main dishes 140-300 Rupees. Large Kingfisher 120Rupees. The staff are really friendly and thanks to the bar manager we got our accomodation finally sorted out.
They have a large TV showing the sports and a DJ on at 8pm.
There is seating outside for the warmer months.
Favorite Dish: Minestrone soup, Nachos. The list keeps growing.

Cafe Amigo is an old fashioned travelers hangout. Colourful paintings on the walls and snowboards on the wall. Music is old style trance.
Cafe Amigos recently moved and as it has a large open front it is cold at the moment. Better for warmer times. Still we are not the only ones braving the cold at Cafe Amigo's.
The apple Pie is great and we are going to try the breakfasts. Unfortunately there was no Expresso available for us to try when we were there.
Favorite Dish: Apple Pie. Apple, cinnamon and sultana's. What else could you want on a cold winters day.

Next to Chopsticks, this place was recommended to us by other travelers for the Baked Beans.
It feels more formal than chopsticks, hen we first arrived the waiters had bow ties on. Travelers are welcome. Prices are a little higher than at Chopsticks. Yes, the baked beans are better than Heinz beans.
There is a wood fire, but it is not as warm as it is at Chopsticks.
Favorite Dish: Homemade Baked beans on Toast.

As you walk in you can feel the warmth of the wood fire. The interior has warm colours, good place to huddle from the cold. During the day there are Tibetian chants on the stereo, in the evening easy listening music. The food is good, we have mainly had the Tibetian food. Chinese food also available. Food is reasonably priced. Beer 100 Rupees for a large Kingfisher, 180 Rupees for a bottle of fruit wine.
On the downside, Beans and toast are beter at Mount View, which is next door.
Popular with travelers, tourists and locals.
Staff are friendly.
Favorite Dish: Thentuk Soup (Tibetian).

Spotlessly clean, run by an Anglo-Indian family - very tasty and broad selection of salads of their own invention, different every day. I especially enjoy the sampler platter, with several salad selections on one plate. Also home-made ice cream. Friendly owners.
I stay in Manali and have eaten here from time to time - always excellent.

Very popular restaurant with tourists situated on the Mall, reasonably priced, pleasant interior and good food.
Favorite Dish: Most of the food i tried was of a very good standard. My travel companion is vegetarian and he recommends the veggie option.

A: Not at Manali but with Delhi at 45 degrees celsius (c. 120 degrees Farenheit), I'm sure just about everyone will be up in the hills. Try other places in Uttarakhand.
