    Toy train Kalka to Shimla

by RAJASTHANBYCAR Written Jul 16, 2006

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

With the honour of placing itself in the Guinness Book of Rail facts and Feats, the toy train deserves a bigger name! The toy train to Kalka and Shimla is one out of 20 vintage mountain railways running in the world. Mastermind of Lord Curzon, this narrow gauge train covers the distance of 96 kms in six hours going through 103 tunnels, 969 bridges with 919 curves, 20 railway stations and 5 level crossings on the route. The train started running in 1904 A.D. and is an engineering marvel. Going through the most picturesque mountains and valleys, the traveller seldom remembers the slow pace of the train. The longest tunnel that it passes through is around 6000 feet with the immediate next follows which is a kilometre long.
The other sightseeing places which are abundant in natural beauty are Summer Hill, the Glen Forest, the Prospect Hill and Anand Dale.

Another reason to hire a car...

by shobhanaj Written Aug 29, 2004

else you will have to travel the way the locals do...this way!! Transport is very slow and infrequent in this part of India. There were some roads we were on where for long stretches we didn't encounter another vehicle. So best to hire a car!

    Hang on to your life

    Hire a car

by shobhanaj Updated Aug 29, 2004

The best way to see this state is by road. The ideal thing to do would be to start in New Delhi. There are many places where one can hire a car. Make sure it is a car with an experienced driver and that it is a four wheel drive. It is best avoided to drive oneself as the mountain roads are extremely narrow in places. So it is best to leave it to the experts. Also as far as possible avoid driving at night - it is too dangerous because of the way the roads are. The other advantage of hiring a car and driver is they will take care of any car trouble. One day our car didn't start and despite about 13 men pushing the cat it refused to start!

All the help didn't get the car started!

    The GYPSY KING to Spiti.

Best way to get to and see around will be in a JEEP (4X4) because of the rugged terrains and very very unpredictabe roads ( Landslides). We travelled by a 4X4 Maruti Gypsy King ( my friend tito's pride & joy)from Delhi.

    Tito's Gypsy King.
