There is not much of night life at Srinagar, the markets closes early. But there are numerous shawl shops and dry fruit shops that is kept open for the tourists till 8.30 or till 9.00 PM. What you can best do, window shopping at Lal Chowk or have a skewer at Lal Chowk with the locals. There is no bar where you can sit and sip your favourite drinks. I am told there are only four off liquor shops in entire Srinagar, where buying drinks is possible but there is no sitting area.

Every night, when we`d return from the shoot to our `houseboat', we had to hop onto one of the waiting `shikaras'. Shikaras are the gondolas of Srinagar... The ten minute ride was something i looked forward to always... the mountains- shilouetted against a sky full of stars, the silence- which was only broken by the sound of the oars as they skimmed the surface of the water, the lights reflected in the still water of the Dal lake- from the street and the rows of houseboats lined up... and the cool breeze... Moments of absolute bliss in the middle of a region, known better these days for political turmoil.
