Kashmir Houseboats

by foulai

Houseboat accomodation on Lake Dal (Srinigar /Kashmir) Be clear , firm and polite from the very beginning of your stay on a houseboat that you do not want to be bothered with regular visiting shikaras (arranged and plotted by your hosts who get a comission). Be consistent and firm...they are very very persuasive and persistent.Do not lose your cool...remain polite! If they are convinced that you have sussed their scams and plots to get more money out of you...then they turn hostile and very unhelpful . Pretend that you are just wanting to 'do your own thing' .Also if they try and get money out of you for a trip/guided tour ...plead poverty...and negotiate a much smaller price. Its unfortunate but you have really got to be ahead of their game....which is difficult because they have mastered the art of trickery.

Lack of flexibility

by peitsing

Staying in a houseboat may be unique but it also impedes our freedom and flexibility..... This is because tourists are left without any transporation except for the shikaras.... and unless one manages to hail a shikara, he/she will be trapped in the houseboat!!Our boathouse owner wanted for us to visit the many cottage industries in the floating villages and as communication with the "public" shikara owners are limited, we're forced to spend big portion of our days visiting each and every cottage industry in the lake... time which we can use for additional sightseeing actually... 1. Not to spend all your days in srinagar by staying on the boathouses2. to negotiate with other shikara owners in arranging for pick-ups from your houseboats so that you would not be left at the "mercy" of the boathouse owners some of whom have hidden agendas.. :P
