International carriers flying into Bangalore are Lufthansa,Singapore Airlines ,Malaysian Airlines,Sri Lankan Airlines, Thai Airways ,British Airways, Air France & Gulf Air. British Airways & air France have five flights a week and Lufthansa now has daily flights.

Proposal for an International Airport in Bangalore has been accepted and construction is underway at Devanahalli, 30 km north of downtown Bangalore. The Airport will be ready in the first quarter of 2008.

Indian Airlines , Jet Airways and Sahara are the major domestic airlines that fly into Bangalore from major other major cities. Air Deccan is a popular no frills airlines that operates to most cities and large towns. [1] (http://www.deccanair.com) Kingfisher Airines (http://www.flykingfisher.com/) is a Bangalore based discount airline company, offering regular flights between Bangalore, Delhi, Goa and Mumbai.

Capt Gopi Nath is the founder of Deccan Airlines, the South West or Easy Jet of India. He is already offering incredible fares to all parts of India and from now on, for foreigners it would become easier to book on line and have e tickets to major destinations within India.
New services to Delhi,Bombay, Calculta has begun
Air Asia of Malaysia, Easy Jet of England and many other airlines are modelled after the granddaddy of them all, South West Airlines of USA, which has successfully operated ever since coming on to the scene about 20 years ago.

Air France from CDG to BLR

  • I was able to look thruogh the airfrance website and find a reasonable fare, on this non stop flight from CDG to BLR. Left on time, an hour at the lounge (Sky Team Elite Plus) and then a very smooth flight of just nine hours from CDG to BLR. Immigration and Customs took all of five minutes! I had arrived with just a shoulder bag with my computer and nothing else! Look forward to a busy itinerary: ayurveda, Yoga, Moksh restaurant, cotton shirts to be made, doctors to be consulted, teeth cleaned, gifts for friends..andback to Paris before Yom Kippur!

Continental Airlines had arranged a Business Class Upgrade for me on a Miami to Paris and then on to Banglalore trip.
I have to say I want to revise my earlier opinion of Business Class on Air Frane. This is the second time to India that i have been upgraded in Air France
Champagne to begin with, excellent foie de gras with sultanas, a mellow white from buordeax, good coffee, spaciuos seats, no one sitting anywhere near you. smooth flight with not too much interruptions.
I am glad to see that my retun trip to Paris also has been upgraded. Merci beaucoup.

Bangalore is a base of low-budget airlines

  • If you would like to take a tour in the northern part and in the southern part of India as well, it is a good idea to start and finish your tour of the northern part in Delhi and catch a plane from Delhi to Bangalore. Low-budget airlines have the cheapest fares to Bangalore among all the southern Indian cities.
I decided to take Spicejet and since I made my reservation early enough, I paid less than 12.000.- Rs for the Delhi-Bangalore return journey for 2 persons incl. taxes. That's a real bargain because it is a long distance.

    Internal flights- Kingfisher is King!
  • By Stubbins on May 8, 2008

  • Kingfisher have new planes, happy staff, and porters who whisk you & your luggage to check in - even for economy class. All the staff I have met from Delhi> Mumbai and then later Mumbai> Bangalore have been great. And the food was good too. There were seatback TVs and comfortable seats. My only gripe is that if the guy in front settles back to sleep you can have a computer on the table. Highly recommeded. Try it and you'll fly Kingfisher again!

    Autorickshaw

  • The fastes way to commute in Bangalore is the Autorickshaw (auto for short) . Autos are quite frequent and are usually found clustered near bus stands, prominent roads, etc., Autos minimum charge is Rs 12 and most meters are not updated with this yet .Also according to a new rule laid by the Govt of India all auto drivers must display their driving licence in an easy to view location . It is illegal to ride in an auto whose driver has an expired liscnese. 50% surcharge after 10 PM. Some drivers may demand 100% surcharge after 10 PM or 11 PM but one must refuse to board in such a case. Heavy luggage will incur an additional fare, usually around Rs.10 or 20.

Most of the Auto drivers will try and cheat you if they know you are not from Bangalore.. they will ask you directions like - should i take the left turn or the right just to test your knowledge ..if you fumble with your answer they will drive you all the way round Bangalore before you reach your destination... On arrival at the airport or station always opt for a prepaid auto / taxi so that you do not need to pay extra when disembarking.

Nowadays a lot of auto-rickshaws come fitted with an electronic fare meter. If you want to take an auto-rickshaw, it is better to look for one with an electronic fare meter - these meters are generally accurate.

A few auto-rickshaw drivers are ill-mannered, and you should be careful when dealing with them. Note that the new digital meters already show the corrected price for the trip (1.5x) after 10PM. Although Bangalorians are known for their polite and mild manners, auto drivers are an exception. Therefore to avoid conflict, consider taking taxis.

  • An Auto-rickshaw in Bangalore - Bangalore
    An Auto-rickshaw in Bangalore
    by Kumarjit
The auto-rickshaw is a special kind of vehicle used only in Indian cities. Although Bangalore has developed a lot in the recent years and is better than what it was few years back, the problem of commuting in the city still remains, especially for the non-localites. Having stayed in Bangalore for more than two years I have had lots of experiences about this.
If you are a foreigner to India and coming to Bangalore, I would suggest that you use the auto-rickshaw for travelling in and around the city. Hwever, if you can arrange for your own vehicle during your stay, it is going to be a blessing for you as the auto-rickshaw drivers here are very clever and charge much more than the actual fare when they see people from other parts of the world. Bangalore does not have yellow cabs. However, you can get taxi service only if you call the Taxi Centre and make a prior booking.
Nevertheless, I feel it will be best for you to contact the travel desk of the hotel in which you will be staying or your travel agent. Because from what I have seen, I can tell you that travelling in Bangalore can be a real trouble if you are a non-localite.

  • Bangalore bus stand is well-maintained and conveniently located opposite the city railway station. Officially named after the founder of Bangalore, 'Kempegowda' but more commonly known as 'the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stand,' it handles buses that connect Bangalore to all major cities and states in south India. T

The main bus stand of 'the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) ,' which maintains bus services within the city, is located next to the 'Majestic Bus stand'

There are 4 major Bus stands: Majestic Bus stand near Gandhi Nagar is close to the railway station and is quite neatly organised and is easily navigable. City Market is around 2 to 3 kms away from Majestic and could daunt newcomers, since it is very disorganised. Shivajinagar in the north and Jayanagar 4th Block in the south have Bus stands as well. Most Bus stops in the city are undergoing a revamp and have good display depicting the buses that frequent the stop and the name of the stop.

Commuting by bus is an experience. I would reccommend boarding the bus at the starting point eiter Majestic or Shivaji Nagar and buying a fare to the last stop. This way you get a mini tour of Bangalore but you will also get to actaully see the real people that live in Bangalore - the traditional middle class .

A NEW ADDITION TO THE BANGALORE BUS SERVICE ARE THE AIR CONDITIONED BUSES .THEY ARE UNDOUBTEDLY MORE EXPENSIVE BUT WELL WORTH THE MONEY U PAY AS U TRAVEL IN COMFORT :)

  • The Bangalore City railway station is situated in the centre of the city, around the Majestic Bus stand and all trains, local and out-bound arrive and depart from here. The newly established Yelahanka railway station located in a suburban location, about 10 kilometres away from the main railway station is growing and there are a few outbound trains that regularly arrive and depart from it.
Bangalore also has a railway station in the Cantonment Area, called the Cantonment Railway Station - this is centrally located and in a better part of town. Not all trains stop here, though.
Bookings can be done at either the railway station or at a few of Indian Railways booking counters at major residential areas. Booking can also be done online from the Indian Railways site.

Note that if you are booking at Bangalore Central and are travelling to Mysore, there is a different line for travellers to Mysore and travellers to all other destinations. This is to cater for the large amount of travellers between Bangalore and Mysore. If travelling to Mysore on a Sunday afternoon, arrive early as there is usually a long ling for reserving tickets!
