    CALICUT BEACH

by kmohandas Written Apr 30, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Whenever you travel to Calicut in India, there are many beaches there that are perfect for a romantic setting. Kozhikode Beach is one of these beaches and you can be sure that the romantic scene will be coupled with the beautiful sunsets on the piers of Kozhikode Beach. In the Kozhikode Beach, there are two piers that stand toward the middle of the sea. These piers are more than 150 years old but they still reminisce with the power of the old times. Kozhikode Beach is very much near the city and it is a “must be see place”.
The beach might be a bit crowded in the evenings, but is well-worth a visit. A spot not to be missed here is the two piers which are reputed to be more than a century old. There is an aquarium, a towering light house as well as a lion’s park in the beach.

    Mother of God Church

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A wonderful church in town The Matre de Deo’s Church of Calicut dates back the early Catholics of the Region, and emerged as a result of evangelization work done by Portuguese Missionariesitual gatherings. In 1513 A.D., a treaty was concluded between the Portuguese and the Zamorin of Calicut by which the Raja allowed the Portuguese to erect a factory at Calicut. To this factory was attached a chapel dedicated to Matre de Deo. It is believed to have housed a stone Cross in bas relief on granite with a Portuguese inscription. This stone Cross, worshiped by the thousands everyday, was installed in the Holy Cross Chapel, attached to the Matre de Deo’s Church, established more than hundred years ago.

The visit of Archbishop of Goa, Dom Alexis de Menezes, to Calicut Jesuit Mission in 1599 was a turning point in the progress of Christian Faith at Calicut. Dom Menezes met Zamorin and agreed to send more Jesuits to Calicut and rebuild the Matre de Deo’s church to a larger dimension with the help of Zamorin. The new Church was built and handed over to the Fathers of the Jesuit Society in the beginning of 17th Century.

    KAPPAD BEACH- GATEWAY TO INDIA

by kmohandas Written Apr 28, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kappad is a pleasant stretch of rock studded beach around 20 kilometers from the heart of Calicut City. This is one of the most charming of Kerala's beaches. Kappad was the Gateway to India through the Malabar coast. Here, 511 years ago, 170 Portuguese sailors led by the famous explorer Vasco da Gama (1460-1524) sailed in and landed on this beach in Kerala. This event created a new chapter in history of the world. This laid the foundation to a long and tumultuous social, political and economic relationship between India and Europe. It was the spices and wealth of Malabar that first brought the Arabs to India. The Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English followed. Kappad beach is a witness to many such landings.
Even today the landscape is not very different from what Vasco da Gama might have seen. The beach is unpolluted and clean and not much crowed.

STONE MEMMORIAL FOR VASCO DA GAMA

by kmohandas Updated Apr 29, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kappad (Kappakadavu) is a famous tourist destination in India, where the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on May 27, 1498. A small stone monument there commemorates the landing with the inscription, "Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498." His expedition gave the Europeans a sea route to reach the wealth of India. This resulted in European colonization of India for about 450 years. During that period Malabar was ruled by the Zamorins (Samoothiris) who gave a warm welcome to Vasco da Gama. Malabar region in India was abundant in spices, and was a major producer of calico textile.
There is a beautiful beach with lot of trees around. You feel fresh and energetic if you take a stroll among the whispering trees.
