A easy daytrip to do from Kochi. We went on a backwater village tour. You can decide between 3 hours or 6 hours. One can off course stay overnight on a house boat. It is one of the highlights of the trip to Kerala. It is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty of this area.
There are many tour operators in Fort Kochi where you can book your trip at very reasonable prices.

Backwaters of Kerala was created by a cataclysm which opened up the cochin harbour and also the multitudes of canals and lakes that make up the backwaters.
You can go for a short ride of about one hour along the canals.
You can go for a longer ride if you wish.
You can stay on a houseboat which will take you along the back waters while you dine on fresh kerala food and sleep surrounded by the tranquility of backwaters kerala

    along the canals, sliding along

Por supuesto, you come all this way to Cochin and dont go on a Backwaters tour? Suresh will arrange for a pick up at the hotel and then one hour later, at Vaikom you board boats, in our case a small boat with just one oarsman and one guide and just two chairs
Emerging from the canal into the river Ita, 35ft at times , the canopy of the greenery with gentle reminders of the people who live in this area.. living here rather than intruding like we do. A cornucopia of botany.. i could recognize, palm trees from Borneo, Cacao from mexico, wild flowers of New Guinea, some australian visitors like myself ( Banksia) and oodles of coconut trees...

Cochin is a jumping off point for a tour of the famous Kerala Backwaters. I booked a seven hour ride at the hotel and it was about a two hour drive to where the boat launched. You can also book an overnight trip. It was one of the best parts of my trip to India and should not be missed. Just a few pics here with info and more pics in my travelogue.
