Near Vasco de Gama Square and the Chinese Fishing Nets is a small fish market. The freshest seafood -fish, prawns, lobsters - can be purchased and cooked for you (made to order) in one of the stalls. Coconuts and other snacks are available nearby. The area comes to life at night with locals and foreigners. A great place for photos.

Not far from the Chinese Fishing nets are the stalls where the catch is sold. Anyone who loves fresh, local food sold on the street shouldn't miss these! Buy your dinner at the nets and have it cooked here! A little further along are slightly more substantial hut restaurants with cafe style seating outdoors - see my restaurant tip for more details.

The Market is a lively and colourful place to visit.
It would have been even better if we had been in a position to buy the fresh fish and take it home to cook - but on a cruise no chance.
We enjoyed the atmosphere and chat, and the sight of fisn freshly caught in the traditional manner.
On the morning of our visit tourists were in the minority and it was a good opportunity to wander round a local market with local people.

Fisherman arrive in the morning, bleary eyed, after the nights spent in the Arabian Sea, the larger catches have already been sold, I am told that they call by cell phones as they approach Cochin and haggle and sell their wares, the other fish are sold to the shop keepers right there and also to the various hotels and kitchens in the island. some fish are still left over and there is an engaging batter about the sales of these.. it is interesting to watch them, as they go about a ritual which must be very ancient.

Near to the Chinese Fishing Nets, is probably the freshest supply of fish in Cochin, as the catch from the nets is brought here, to the market.

Lobster, crabs, mullet, sardines and freshwater fish are on display, as are fish from further afield that are also sold here.

Nearby, are fish fryers. You purchase your fish, then take it across to the kitchens where it will be prepared, cooked and served for a few rupees.

I didn't try this myself, but it sounds like a good dining out experience! I found it quite interesting looking at all the unusual fish on display
