Not a great deal of entertainment as we know however some hotels provide live music, tradional dancing displays and Kathikeli shows. Many bars around the Lighthouse beach area ideal for people watching. Thank goodness that the loud cheap tacky theme bars do not exist in Kovalam and people have to entertain themeselves by talking to each other.

Nightlife in Kovalam revolves around the many bars and restaurants. Theres a variety of cuisines on offer.
The beachfront is the place to enjoy cheap excellent food, and people watching! Theres a continual stream of holidaymakers from all around the world, locals, and vendors.
Young boys playing wooden whistles, and swirling yo yos and other brightly lit trinkets, enticing you to buy their goods.
Some bars have live music, just look out for flyers posted along the beachfront, or follow your ears!
Away from the beach, restaurants are cheaper, and probably more relaxed.
While I was there, most places seemed to be shutting before or just after midnight, so either just return to your accom for a quiet night cap, or meet up with friends and share your duty free until the early hours!
Dress Code: Come as you are!
Its probably a good idea to wear mossie repellent, and cover up to prevent bites.
Carry a torch too, as power cuts occur regularly.

From the bars and restaurants, music can often be heard, usually cd recordings of traditional music, or western hits.
Some of the restaurants have cds on sale (eg Coconut Grove Restaurant) mainly of traditional meditation style music.
One night I'd enjoyed listening to a particular track in a restaurant (think it was Velvet Dawn), and asked the waiters what it was. They offered to make me a copy for a few rupees..A great souvenir of indian film music!
It's possible to catch live music too....flyers are usually posted around resort.
I spent a couple of nights listening to live performances, one being completely unforgetable (see Kovalam intro)

If your the alcohol consuming type, like me, the beach can get expensive real fast with beers costly twice what they do at the local liquor store and drinks being weak.
Dress Code: Here's a pearl of wisdom. Located roughly aorund 5 km from the lighhouse beach is the closest liquor store. Any rickshaw guy will take you there and back for around 50 rupees. Just ask to be taken to the liquor store. It's on a slope and the prices are written on a board outside the store. They have everything from Toddy to Tequila.

As the sun starts to fade, head to a beachside bar or restaurant, preferably with a rooftop view. Order a cool drink (some bars will have Happy Hour) and sit back and enjoy the views of the sun setting over The Arabian Sea.
Over on the rocks between Lighthouse and Hawa Beach, you'll see people waiting to clap and cheer as the sun sets.

There are streams of restaurents and shacks lining the beach front who organise lots of nightime activity. If this was Goa then there would have been an all night long wild beach party, but since this is kerala you have traditional dances, fireworks, magic shows n all that jazzzz... U will also find a lot tof theme parties at these restaurents, frankly u need to be near a beach at night in a place like this, to fully get the feeling of a coastal holiday.
Dress Code: Cover ur self, that's enuf, no nudity please, kerala tourism are hard on people who stray.

Despite Kovalam being a foreign tourist destination, there isn't much ngihtlife there. During busy season, there are occational outdoor performances and Kathakali.
