Religion in Kerala

by Canadienne

Including smaller numbers of other religions, Kerala is said to be approximately 25% Christian, 60% Hindu and 15% Muslim. As through the rest of the country, in many places Hinduism has influenced its neighbouring religions ~ you'll find Christians performing puja rituals at church, similarly to in a temple (offering incense, food and sometimes smearing paint over religious icons of Jesus). While boating through the canals, we often passed other boats filled with people on their way to church (it was a Sunday morning).

Local Washer And Dryer

by herzog63

For those of you who like to hand their laundry to someone else to do. This is where you might find your underwear drying while walking through the back areas. There are very few actual washing machines. Most of your clothes will be beat on a rock then layed out on the ground to dry in the sun.

Tourism

by jolou

Be aware that Kovalum has only relatively recently become a tourist area. Its probably even worse now, but when we were there, there was very much a sense that the local people were a little unhappy about the new tourist hotspot in their area.

How to address

by keralam

- Shake-hands offered by men to ladies are mostly not accepted. Say 'Namasthe' to address.

Religion

by ieee

Kerala has a good mix of several religions - Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Judaism. As long as you respect all the religions, people are happy to let u into the temples, churches etc.

Working the boats

by herzog63

Most of the produce in the area is shipped by boat, barge, or something that floats. I loved watching these boats glide through the Jellyfish infested backwaters of Kerala!!
