Varkala beach (and other sites): Kathakali show

Kathakali dancer, Varkala, Kerala

The Kathakali makeup can take hours to apply. They use many local herbs and seeds to develop the vibrant colors of the hand-painted masks.

Join the 'show' early to see this painstaking process, because the actual performance I saw was actually quite short and not that interesting in and of itself.

There isn't really any nightlife in Kerala. Perhaps in touristy town of Kovalam might have more to offer but limited to restaurants open til late. If you really want something to do at night, you should visit during Onam festival when there are number of daily cultural programs until 9 or 10 pm.

To be honest, Kerala offers little in the way of night life in the traditional sense.
Eating out is the entertainment itself, or just wandering through the shops.
In Kovalam, which is the tourist resort right down south, there are a few bars with music (often reggae?!) where traveller-y people hang out.
There are cultural shows with classical dancing or drama in some of the posher hotels, I believe.

There was very little going on after about 10 or 11 at night. This may have changed more recently, but be prepared with a pack of cards!
