Periyar Sanctuary Favorites

Favorite thing: We stumbled into here late at night when our homestay turned out not to be booked, and it was fortuitous. The TTDC has in its service a Mr. Sha, who is knowledgeable about the area and has ecotourism leanings and personal connections to several homestays in Thekkady, so he turned out to be a great find. He arranged everything we did in Thekkady (Bamboo rafting in the reserve, spice tour, elephant ride, tea factory tour, Kathakali performance, Kalaripayattu demonstration, and almost all transportation), and took a personal interest. He said he could arrange trekking packages/tours in other wildlife reserves in Kerala as well. And he was a nice guy. His “fee” is based on how pleased you are with his services, nothing added to the cost of the event itself. (That’s as of Jan, 2007.)
