The Divine Mother known as Rajarajeswari (Adiparasakthi) is worshipped here in three forms Saraswathy in the morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga in the evening. There is an Idol of Mahavishnu on the same pedestal and so the Deity is called Ammenarayana, Devinarayana, Lakshminarayana and Bhadrenarayana also. Along with Lakshmi & Narayana there are idols of Brahma, Siva, Ganapathi (Ganesh), Subramanya and Sastha on the same pedestal. "MAKOM Thozhal" (worship on the Makom day) is the most important festival of the temple which is celebrated in the month of Kumbham. (Feb / March) It is believed that Bhagavathy in her full attire gave darsan to Vilwamangalam Swamiyar on the Makom day and appears on the same day every year for giving darsan to the devotees in her special appearance. by msforbes That is one of the first things that visiters do when they reach this part of India. A couple of the more popular ones are 8 hours costing around 150-200 rupees. I went on a 2.5 hour ride. It was a public boat that took people to and fro their homes, and town. This ride took me from Kollem to Alepy. The cost was 6 rupees. From the train station in Kollem, I was greeted by two jolly policemen. "Your good name, sir?" they asked me, they shook my hand, and introduced themselves, and asked where I was from. They then took me just a few steps to my ferry, and wished me a pleasent stay in Kerala. Then again, police here in Toronto do the same thing. Leave a Comment

Chinese Fishing Nets, Cochin by suvanki Another jewel in Keralas crown! Cochin brings together a mix of cultures, religions, architecture and cuisines. Its large harbour and port have played a huge part in the trading and development of SW India, throughout the centuries. Today, it still runs as an important port, with a developing modern city of offices, shops and restaurants. However, much of its heritage can be seen, in the architecture with Portuguese, Dutch and British styles, which again is reflected in the cuisine of this area. The Chinese Fishing nets, Jew Town, The Dutch Palace, St Francis Church are some of the must see's as well as dolphin spotting as you ferry along between the islands of Cochin. The many restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, and another must see is a Kathakali performance. Please see my Cochin/Kochi page for more info Leave a Comment

Vamanapuram Temple by ajayzener Any where in kerala within a kilometers range you will find small temples, people worship the dieties here. Unlike the famous temples these are only frequented by the localites and hence it is a calm and serene place to be in, far from the vendors and the tourist guides. These temples also have their histories and the architecture may be splendid in some of them. You may be present for the puja in the mornings and evenings when the smell of the camphor, the sound of the bells and the chanting of matras may take you to a different world altogather.

M enjoying a coconut flavoured cocktail by suvanki Copra is the dried oil yielding kernal of the coconut, which provides the oil that is used in cosmetics, soaps, moisturisers, conditioners and for culinary purposes. Some vendors on Kovalam beach sell bottles of coconut oil as a sun lotion! Beware, you'll fry and burn! Coconut water is found in drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) coconut milk, and a form of vinegar! In many of the bars around Lighthouse Beach in Kovalam, coconut based cocktails are popular, served with a straw and the coconut! Leave a Comment

by msforbes Ferries shuttle across the narrow strait from Fort Kocki to Vypin Island. The island is nice and relaxing for the regular hustle and bustle of urban India. It has a lighthouse, and the Pallepuran Fort, built in 1403 by the Portuguese is one of the oldest European monuments in India. Leave a Comment

Kathakali musicians Cochin by suvanki In Cochin, live music accompanies the performance, tho' the performance I saw in Kovalam was to tape recorded music. ( which was a problem with the frequent power cuts!) The musicians are usually illuminated by a single lantern or candle flame, which adds to the atmosphere. The main instrument is the drum, a long barrel shaped instrument (sudda mandalam) It is beaten at both ends, producing a resonant rythym. Singers accompany the drummer, the sounds they produce and the drum beat alters to portray the emotions the dancers are acting. The musicians are highly skilled professionals. The dancers don't speak or sing, but rely on the accompanying musicians, together with their facial expressions/hand gestures etc to portray moods and emotions to tell the story Leave a Comment Address: Art Kerala, Kannanthodath Lane, Ernakulum, CochinPhone: 2375238Directions: See Make Up tip for directionsWebsite: www.updateindia.com/artkerala Other Contact: art_kerala@satyam.net.in

Coir soaking on the Backwaters by suvanki The coconut shell has many uses, mainly for fuel and charcoal. It is also often used in a variety of handicrafts. Bowls, animal figures, ornaments and hangings etc. The husk provides the coir that is seen worldwide in mats and rope. A common sight on the Backwaters is patches of coir soaking (upto 6 months) before it is twisted/ 'spun' into ropes or mats. It's possible to see or even try rope making for yourself on some of the backwater boat trips. An unusual souvenir to take home.... rope you've made your self! Leave a Comment Address: All over KeralaPhone: 2382831Directions: One place to try ropemaking is through the backwater trips offered by Kadhikan S R Surendran from Kovalam Contact details below.
