The coconut shell has many uses, mainly for fuel and charcoal. It is also often used in a variety of handicrafts. Bowls, animal figures, ornaments and hangings etc. The husk provides the coir that is seen worldwide in mats and rope. A common sight on the Backwaters is patches of coir soaking (upto 6 months) before it is twisted/ 'spun' into ropes or mats. It's possible to see or even try rope making for yourself on some of the backwater boat trips. An unusual souvenir to take home.... rope you've made your self! This festival is exclusively for womenfolks, and only women are allowed to perfom this "thiruvathirakali".On the day of Thiruvathira, women take an early bath and get dressed in traditional attire (Mundu and Veshti). They take noyambu (fast) on that day and have only non-rice food. In the evening, they perform the dance and decorate their hair with Pathirapoovu (a kind of flower). This is a group dance and steps in this dance are very simple but elegant. 5 to 7girls will stand in a circle around a lighted brass lamp, and dance each step to the rhythm of the songs they sing, clapping their hands. These special songs for thiruvathira is calledThiruvaathirappattu.. The festival Thiruvathira comes in Dhanu Maasam (January). Thiruvathirakali is also called as "Kaikottikali". 2000 year old Jewish quarter has the oldest functioning synagogue in the Commonwealth. Also the streets are full of very interesting shops. There are some that really make me wonder just how they obtained such merchandise. Mostly stuff you expect to see in a place of worshop. Leave a Comment

All of the Guide books and the people that I spoke to called this style net the Chinese fishing net. It must have come from Chinese explorers a long time ago. They are very interesting as they untilize a gas lamp that hangs over the middle of net at night and then when the fisherman thinks there is a good school of fish over the net he will lift it out of the water and hope that he has a bunch of fish!! It must work quite well as I saw alot of thes nets in the Backwaters. Leave a Comment
