Chinese fishing nets by herzog63 All of the Guide books and the people that I spoke to called this style net the Chinese fishing net. It must have come from Chinese explorers a long time ago. They are very interesting as they untilize a gas lamp that hangs over the middle of net at night and then when the fisherman thinks there is a good school of fish over the net he will lift it out of the water and hope that he has a bunch of fish!! It must work quite well as I saw alot of thes nets in the Backwaters. Leave a Comment

Kathakali Hunter character by suvanki Thadi or Tati (Beard) characters. Demon characters such as The Hunter Wears a red beard and false nose, with an outsized crown. He also is seen as a comic character. Face paint is black, representing evil. Other tati characters may have black or white beards as does Hanuman the monkey god Leave a Comment Address: Art Kerala, Kannanthodath Lane, Ernakulum, CochinPhone: 2375238Website: www.updateindia.com/artkerala Other Contact: art_kerala@satyam.net.in

Kerala Fisherman by herzog63 There are many sizes of boats to be found cruising the Backwaters of Kerala. These dugout canoes seemed like they were from times gone by but they were still being used. The paddles also looked quite interesting as the blade was very oversized. I'm not sure if there were Salt Water Crocodiles in the area as I never saw any but was told that there could be some. Maybe I was told that just so I would be excited about the trip. I Was Excited even without being told that!! Leave a Comment

Varkala Beach, Kerala by suvanki About 40km north of Trivandrum, is the beach resort of Varkala. The beach is reached by climbing down steps from the top of the steep cliff face. ( probably not to be recommended for those with walking/breathing difficulties) The cliffs/ beach have experienced accidents that have been alcohol related, so officially Varkala is a 'dry' resort. If you want an alcoholic beverage, have a quiet word with your waiter!! The long white sandy beach and softly sloping waters edge, makes this a good place for swimming/ relaxing. It appeared to be a lot quieter than the beaches of Kovalam. Ayurveda, yoga, massage etc can be experienced. Kathakali performances can be seen Dec - January. At the top of the cliffs are a variety of cafes/ restaurants, tourist info, money exchange and shops. (One selling Tibetan goods) Taxi and tuk tuk ranks nearby. motorbike hire also available Accommodation from budget to more upmarket, found between town and beach area. The sea here in January was nice and warm, a great relaxing experience! Leave a Comment Address: Varkala Beach, Nr KollamDirections: 42km n of Trivandrum 24 km s of Kollam Trains and regular buses to/ from these places. 2km from Varkala town and train station to the beach.

Man swimming for toddy by suvanki During one of my Backwater Cruises, we spotted this man, speedily swimming to shore! We were informed he was off to get his toddy fix from the nearby distillary. His money was secured in his headwear! Needless to say, we weren't tempted to jump overboard to join him!! Having tried the 'delights' of Toddy, we weren't that impressed! Sailin in God's own country by alycat Kerala is known worldover as God’s Own Country. Set in the southern part of India, this state is one of the ten ‘Paradises Found’ by the National Geographic Traveler, for its diverse geography and overwhelming greenery. It is a place revered n acclaimed for the contemporary nature of its cultural vibrancy, and much appreciated for the soothing, rejuvenating paradise that it is. Living is a houseboat which is one of the major attractions, an absolutely wonderful, unforgettable experience, which unfortunately we didnt do, but we did go on a days ride ride in the backwaters of Alleppy in a houseboat, a smaller one though! Most of the houseboats are huge, slow moving, exotic barge used for leisure trips - are the reworked boats of olden times. Have a ride in one of these for an experience of a lifetime, even if it is a short ride for a few hours, cos it truly lets u see the life of ordinary people living in the backwaters of kerala. Chinese Fishing Nets by Canadienne We came through Kochi for a day and night enroute to the Keralan backwaters. It's actually a really nice town and would be a lovely place to spend a couple of days. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to occupy the land (a series if inlets and islands) in the 16th century; later, it was held by Dutch and British. All of these influences can be seen in the buildings in an area of the city called Fort Kochi. A few of my group members were really pleased with the antiques shops in Jew Town ~ home to India's oldest synague. The synagogue itself was closed due to a community death the week we were there (only twenty-odd Jews still remain in Kochi). The Chinese fishing nets are found on the north-west of Fort Kochi. Atmospheric Periyar Lake by Canadienne Periyar National Park is an unusual result of human intereference in the environment ~ a dam was constructed across the Periyar River near Thekkady in the late 1880's, submerged a large section of land and creating the lake that lies at the centre of the National Park. About 40 years later, the Maharaja of the area declared the lake and 600 km of forest around it a wildlife sanctuary. It has officially been declared a tiger reserve, but much of its "fame" is also based on it being an excellent place to sight elephants. I can't attest to either one. . .our boatride around the lake was beautiful, but devoid of any notable wildlife. :-) Leave a Comment
