Jew Town in Cochin

by Justin_goa

The Cochin Jews were historically divided into two major communities-the so- called Black Jews, or Malabaris (85 percent of Cochinis), who regard themselves as the descendants of the original settlers, and the White Jews, or Paradesim (14 percent), descendants of immigrants from various Middle East and European countries. There are also a few Brown Jews, or Meshuhurarum, who are descended from emancipated slaves. They became spice merchants, business owners and professionals and spoke the local language -Malayalam-as well as English. The community has never had a rabbi of its own and was rarely visited by one. Any synagogue elder is eligible to lead prayers, and the men take turns. The Jews have adopted and modified many of their host country's customs. Colourful oil lamps hang from synagogue ceilings in keeping with Hindu tradition; all synagogues are entered barefoot and for hardala...

A peaceful Hill Station

by Justin_goa

The beautiful and peaceful hill station of Ponmudi is situated at a distance of 61 km from Thiruvananthapuram and at an altitude of 1000 m above the sea level. Come to Ponmudi to fall in love with the bountiful nature, serene surroundings and several tourist attractions. The hill station is a welcome break from the rush of the city where you can relax in the laps of nature without any hurries and worries. If you have a passion for trekking and long leisurely walks, explore the hill station of Ponmudi. There is a lot to see and behold like hills, valleys tea-estates and cottages. Ponmudi is an ideal and a beautiful picnic spot, as it is at a convenient distance from Thiruvananthapuram and well endowed with natural springs. The Golden Valley is a small yet scenic viewpoint.

Kerala Backwaters + a warning

by Fitzu17

One of the GREAT things to do in India is the house boar cruise for 24 hours or more at Kerala. We got our houseboat at Allepey & loved the peace & quite + the fantastic food. However under no circumstances hire your boat from the ATDC (Allepey Tourism Development Corp). These rip-off bastards gave us a dodgy old houseboat with no air -con when we had specifically requested and paid for an air -con boat. Trying to get a refund after a near sleepless night was impossible as all of a sudden the boss was missing and no phone could be found.

Eravikulam National Park

by suvanki

This park is situated amongst the stunning scenery of the Western Ghats and tea plantations near Munnar. The area has been likened to the Scottish Highlands, with its mist covered mountains and small lakes. The parkland was designated a National Park in 1978, with the aim of protecting the Niligiri tahr- a goatlike creature, indiginous to this area- also known as the rock goat or varayadu.Walking in the park is restricted to pathways in order to protect the grassland.open 0800 - 17.30entrance fee (not sure how much we paid, as included in tour) charge for video camerasPlease see my Munnar page for more info.

THIRUVATHIRAKALI - KAIKOTTIKALI

by ushar

This festival is exclusively for womenfolks, and only women are allowed to perfom this "thiruvathirakali".On the day of Thiruvathira, women take an early bath and get dressed in traditional attire (Mundu and Veshti). They take noyambu (fast) on that day and have only non-rice food. In the evening, they perform the dance and decorate their hair with Pathirapoovu (a kind of flower). This is a group dance and steps in this dance are very simple but elegant. 5 to 7girls will stand in a circle around a lighted brass lamp, and dance each step to the rhythm of the songs they sing, clapping their hands. These special songs for thiruvathira is calledThiruvaathirappattu.. The festival Thiruvathira comes in Dhanu Maasam (January). Thiruvathirakali is also called as "Kaikottikali".

Velakali

by ushar

This spectacular martial dance is performed by men in some of the temples of southern Kerala. The dancers, clad in the traditional clothes and colourful headgear of the medieval Nair soldiers, engage in vigorous movements and dexterous sword play, to the accompaniment of an orchestra comprising the maddalam, ilathalam, kombu and kuzhal. Velakali originated in Ambalappuzha where Mathoor Panicker, chief of the Chempakasserri army, promoted it to boost the martial spirit of the people. The dance form is a regular feature of the annual festivities at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna temple in Alappuzha district and Thiruvalla Sree Vallabha temple district pathanamthitta.

Kanyakumari

by ieee

We also went to kanyakumari (which falls in the state of tamil nadu) and is the southern most tip of india. The beauty of this place is that you could stand at one location and watch the sunrise over the Bay of Bengal and the sun set over the Arabian sea.

Suchindham temple

by ieee

On our way back from Kanyakumari we stopped by the Suchindam temple. Once again this is a Hindu temple but the art and architechture is good. Don't miss the pillar (made of a single stone) that emits the sapta swaras (the seven basic notes of indian music) or the stone that emits sounds of several percussion instruments. I don't think you can go knocking on these stones but the priest will do it for a small donation.
